I recently got a low coolant message from my 1998 vert. Can anyone tell me what is the recomended coolant for the ls1 and the best way to add this coolant.

Use the GM Dex-cool coolant (orange stuff), something like this:

I dilute 50/50 with distilled water, or I believe you can buy the pre-diluted stuff. Fill the reservoir when cold.

Your owners manual will give you correct coolant. I believe dextron is the correct one,

However, this is not a good sign. I suggest you get your system pressure checked. Low coolant means you have lost some coolant either from a leaky hose, a leaky radiator or posibly a bad water pump. To keep from getting stranded, get it chacked out.

So the 50/50 stuff is not allready diluded with water. I was under the impression that the 50/50 was allready mixed with water.

Make sure you already have the red stuff in it, You can see it in the side tank, You don't want to mix the stuff. Someone might of changed it to the green stuff and if that is the case add green...

Have you checked to see if the coolant level is actually low? There is a mark on the front of the coolant recovery tank that coolant should be at when the engine is cold. I believe early C5's had some problems with the low coolant sensor in the side of the coolant recovery tank. My 99 gave the low coolant message a couple of times but the coolant level was OK. I did some repositioning of the connector on the sensor(It was being pushed on by the heater hoses that are in close proximty to it).
I have not had the problem since.

Check this thread:

It could be the sensor as Pewter Ragtop suggests.

I took mine sensor out and cleaned it, DIC message went away.

If it really is low on coolant, add DexCool (or equivalent) to the coolant reservoir. But, you might also want to ensure that the sensor is not acting up.
