Default TPS Question

I thinking of getting chrome thin spoke wheels for my '99 and have a question on the tire pressure sensors. Can you switch the TPS from the factory wheels over to the new ones? If so, how hard is it to do? the local Chevy dealer doesn't recommend you do that becuase the TPS are banded and epoxed on and are difficult to get off and reinstall? Then they may not work properly on the new wheels?
He also said you can't use the newer style TPS sensors becuase the frequency is different?
What's my choices here? New TPS cost as much as the wheels themselves.

Unless you already have aftermarket wheels on your car...normally the TPS shouldn't be banded on. I bought both aftermarket chrome thin spokes and a set of polished speedline thin spokes and have mounted the standard 99 TPS's to both sets of wheels. There is an aftermarket TPS system available that may be cheaper than buying new GM TPS. Check out that big auction site. Also, there are forum members that sell TPS that they have replaced the battery's......less expensive than new...

Maybe the dealer was thinking of a C4?

No reason to think your sensors would be banded if they are stock rims. 2001 and later have different sensors that won't be compatible with your '99. Shouldn't be a big deal to have the sensors swapped out when you get your new rims. Good Luck

They'll mount up just like they did on your stock wheels on the chrome wheels. Don't go to the dealer but rather go to a tire shop to mount your new wheels. The dealer is wrong about how they're mounted so that should be your first clue.

So I am purchasing some Speedline Z06 C5 style wheels to replace my stock thin spokes on an 04. Tire shop should be able to take the TPS sensors off my old wheels and put them on my new speedline wheels, is this correct? will I have to reprogram the sensors? Thanks in advance!

A competent tire shop can make the TPS swap for you. And as long as they keep the sensors in the same location, you should not need to relearn the sensors. But just in case, the relearn process if very easy as long as you have a decent magnet handy.

Also most decent tire shops can reprogram them for you!
