Has anyone tried to find a wheel/tire combinating that will fit as a temporary spare when one of the SC tires gets a flat?
Since most of my driving is within 10 miles of my home, I'm trying to find a better solution than using the GM supplied goop and compressor to get my car home in case of a flat. I'd like to find an appropriately sized wheel/tire at a junk yard that I could keep in my garage. If I get a flat at work, for example, I could call my wife who could bring the spare and a jack to me. That way I can get the car home and deal with repairing the flat later. I'm not thinking of a wheel the same size as the original but something that would be readily available for $10 in a junk yard.
Is there any problem repairing a flat once the goop has been used? I assume it needs to be cleaned completely out of the tire before the flat can be fixed.
In 38 years and I don't know how many hundreds of thousands of miles of driving I have never had to change a tire on the road. Sure, I've had punctures. Sometimes I realized a tire was loosing air because the car's handling went off, and somtimes I could hear the click- click- click of the screw that was stuck through the tread. I all cases I was able to air the tire a few times for the few hours or days it took to take the tire to a repair facililty and get it patched.
Bottom line is that flats on the road are very uncommon. I've coasted to the side of the road with electrical and mechanical problems, but never with a flat tire. You're better off just joining AAA and calling them on a cell phone if you have a flat than screwing around with trying to install a spare tire. Also, if you go this route you'll need a jack and lug wrench, too.
I've had my Z since October and so far have pulled 4 screws out of the tires. Only 2 have penetrated far enough to cause a leak. It is ver annoying that these tires are such nail magnets but at least I haven't been stranded yet. i also thought about a space saver spare or something but realized that I would also have to carry very heavy jack also to get the car up plus a lug wrench. Since complete blow-outs are rare I figured I'd just live with the risk.
