So about 2 weeks ago someone hit my car while it was parked and drove off without leaving a note! I had to go through insurance to get it repaired, as it needed a fender and bumper cover replacement along with some other misc damage. I had it repaired through insurance and got it back Friday. The repair looks great, except.... This morning I noticed significant damage to one of my rims
I called the ins. company. The guy who assessed the damage is off till Wed., but I was able to speak with his supervisor. Photos were taken of pre-existing damage prior to being repaired. None of these photos show the new damage - however the owner of the repair shop claims it was there before and that she discussed it with the ins. rep. So then why no pictures?!?! and why wasn't it discussed with me?!?!
As it stands now, I'm waiting to speak with the guy who did the assessment. But he won't be back till Wed. Any suggestions on how I should move forward with this? Anyone been though anything similar before? HELP!!! I'm so furious right now!
This might be a tough one. Any chance the hit & run caused the damage on the rim?
It quite possibly could have happened while in the shop, but it's going to be tough to prove. I'm not an insurance adjuster so I don't know what they are looking for and their procedures, however your situation is a good reminder that we should be there when the claim adjuster writes his/her report. He/she probably thought the wheel damage was done prior to the accident and that it is not covered. If he/she did not make a note of it that it was un-related to the accident, then it's your word for the repair shop. Might be tough collecting...
I really don't think it happened during the hit and run. All damage from the accident was pretty localized to the front driver's side. No damage on the rear.
The frustrating part is that I went over all the pre-existing damage with the repair shop when I dropped it off. I also went over the pre-existing damage with the ins. guy over the phone while he was at the shop. He took photos of all my other damage (including other damaged rims with minor "curb burn") but I'm expected to believe he somehow missed this? No way, if it was there, he would have taken a photo!
Now it's basically my word vs. there's... very frustrating.

That was my thought too. They tried saying it couldn't happen at the shop because they "dont' have any curbs"!?!?! I said, "this is not curb damage!" It looks like something heavy was dropped on my rim or maybe slipped on the lift or something?
Let your insurance guy fight it out with the body shop. You don't really care if the hit and run did it or the body shop. (you do, but you know what I mean). Just tell the adjuster you want your insurance to cover it under your initial claim! Is the body shop a "Preferred" shop by your insurance co? If it is, they (Body Shop and your Insurance) will work something out.
Good suggestion. Yes, the repair shop is a "preferred" shop with my insurance. Perhaps I can get it covered under the original repair. I just asked the insurance guy to send me over the photos from his assessment. We'll see what they reveal.
Was that on the same side of the damage. This is like closing the barn door after the horses have escaped, however , when I had an accident with my wife's car not mine, I took pictures of the damage before having it repaired. That way, I had proof of all damages which occurred as a result of the accident.
Damage is on the same side as the accident. I did take photos, but none of the rear since all damaged was pretty well isolated around the front fender. The ins. company took photos of the entire car - documenting previous damage. Still waiting to see them myself.
Looks like something heavy hit it and bounced twice to me. I work in commercial glass and this is the same kind of damage that occasionally occurs in our fab shop to our aluminum extrusions, from dropping or banging something into it or dropping the metal itself onto another object.

Make sure this "insurance sponsored" or "preferred" shop uses original, new GM parts and not clone/aftermarket or used GM parts.
.... let "cool heads" prevail. We know the feeling when something happens to our "baby",
but you need to cool down after you get this written out like to have done here on the Forum.
Venting your anger "in writing" is the best way to let off the steam.
So, don't have a heart attack over this. Calm and cool is the way to go. After all
things can be fixed.
