Default stupid question

i know ive seen a thread before about what jack to use when changing your oil, but for the life of me i am unable to find it. I just came back from a supply store and the jacks they had wouldnt clear to get under my car. What jacks do the forum members use? Oh by the way i have a z06 2001. and what web site is good for ordering to get the jack? thanks in advance.

Get a set of race ramps to drive the car up on first then any regular jack will work to get the car up higher.

Or just buy a low-profile jack that will fit under the car as it sits. There are plenty of aluminum "race style" jacks out there that range in price from $70 and up. (I got mine for around $200.)

Harbor Freight sells an aluminum low profile jack for under $100 that many of us here on the forum like. Look for a thread here on the forum that describes using 2x6 wood as pads to spread out the contact point where the jack lifts the cradles. You can also use 2x12 lumber to roll the wheels onto and raise it enough that you do not need a low profile jack. You also need them to raise the front a little so that when lifting the rear you do not break the front air dam. Ramps as mentioned already also are good to have for working on cars. Lifting Corvettes is not a task to be taken lightly.
A pun is the lowest form of humor,
Jeff

And do not forget to use jackstands with 2x6 lumber. Hydraulic jacks can sometimes lose their seals and drop vehicles down unexpectedly.

^^Don't forget to use jacking pucks or something similar to prevent damaging your rocker panels.

As someone metioned before, if you already have a normal jack you can make some ramps for your car for less thant 40$ in materials that will allow you to use any jack. I built mine out of 2x10 board and basically measured from the front wheel to the edge of the front spoiler and made the step ups that distance, so as not to damage the plastic lip(not that it would actually do any real damaged). If you need pics i'll be more than happy to take some for you.

Or you could go out and purchase a low profile jack and do it that way. Personally this wasnt an option for me because my car is so low to the ground, thats why I went with the ramps.

just drive up on some ramps and that's all you will need. If you need to use a jack...just make a small lift using some boards to drive up on..then you can jack away!

I have the aluminum low profile from Harbor Freight. It is worth it's money just by being soo much lighter. You can either drive the car on a pair of 2x4s to get the jack under the front or do what I do. I turn the wheels all the way in one direction and the jack will slip between the front of the tire and the fender on the side that that the wheels are turned. (turn left, jack goes on left side) You just have to hold the little side air dam piece out of the way. Then you can get it under the cradle.

I don't know what your budget is but, check this jack out. Go to Northerntool.com and punch in Omega #29023 in the search bar.

I have these and agree they are the best I have seen, but they are no longer available. Maybe someday, they will be able to import them again.

If you are not going to be carrying the jack for pit stops, I would still go with a steel jack for garage use. You don't have to carry it, just roll it.

Sears has a low profile on sale for like $59.99 and it fits with ramps.
