I found on my 2001 Coupe that I could improve the AM reception by disconnecting the rear window defroster wires. Both of them.
The AM antenna is on the rear window, FM is on the front. There's also an antenna matching unit in the middle just in front of the rear window, in the 'bow' above your head. Check to make sure all the wires and cables are good....
Good luck. My AM works as good as the one in my Yukon now...

Mine had terrible AM reception when I first bought it in 2004, and it just got worse and worse and now I get NO AM reception. It bugs me because the only radio station in Toronto which gives regular traffic updates 24 hours a day is an AM station. So if I'm driving somewhere in the middle of the day, I can't get any traffic updates from any of the FM stations, the only time I can get them is during rush hour (and even then, this AM station does it every ten minutes, while most FM stations only seem to do it every 15 or 20) So in other words, it's a HUGE PITA that I don't have any AM reception anymore!

Just curious! How does knowing the traffic "update" every 10 minutes change anything. If traffic is slow knowing about it doesn't make it any faster.
Sorta like the weather. I look outside and it's raining. I don't need a weatherman to state the obvious.

But knowing exactly where the accidents are in a timely fashion can allow you to change your route and avoid getting stuck. Toronto's traffic is absolutely brutal, and when I was able to listen to AM in the car and get a traffic update at 5:11pm everyday, that time was right when I was pulling out of my parking garage at work, so I could take a different route home and save myself a major traffic jam. One accident on highway 401 can bring traffic to an almost complete standstill and it happens quite often too. So by not having AM reception, I have to rely on the FM channels to give their traffic, and since they aren't updating often enough, I can never hear the traffic report until after I'm already on the highway and by then it's too late to change my route. So yes, having updates every ten minutes is a major big deal in Toronto. That's the only time I listen to AM, just for that report and then I switch back to listen to CDs and crank up the tunes!
Disconnect the rear window defroster on both sides of the window, about half way up if I remember right, that was 3 years ago.
Inside the bow is the actual antenna connections, you should check those to make sure they are hooked up! I'd suggest you disconnect each one and then reconnect to make sure they have a good connection. This starts at the very TOP of the window and only has one wire. The defroster has two wires, one on each side, one is power the other is ground. You can leave the radio on while you do this to see if it helps....

I too am having bad AM reception intermitantly, where as my other vehicles have no problems. As suggested, I disconnected both sides of the rear window defroster power connectors, that solved the problem. Good reception now. I very seldom use the defroster, if ever, so that's not a problem. Thanks for the suggestion.
