93 Shell or other top tier gas!!Does raise a question,,does altitude affect the efficiency of the gas. When traveling to the north west(St.Louis to Great Falls Mt.) When around Wyoming onward all the octane ratings were all about 2-3 points lower. Will 90-91 function about the same at the higher altitude as 93 at lower levels??

The Corvette engine is one of the few where the higher octane will make a difference in performance. With most engines, it doesn't matter, you gain nothing. However, all engines made today for the US market are designed to use 87 indefinitely with no damage, and that includes the Corvette, Maybe not the same performance, but no damage, That being said, I always use 93, or the highest I can get. But if I were on a road trip, and got 87, I wouldn't worry, because the computer adjusts (uses less aggressive profile), then back to 93. Anyhow, that's my 2 cents. I believe that is in the owners manual, but i agree with the poster above who put it so simply, "read your owners manual."
Your right it is bad. Think about your piston on its way up the cylinder. The fuel and air mixture detonates and the piston is still on its way to TDC. Think of it as a major gain in compression ratio. Not to good for your engine and can lead to vented pistons and bent rods.
the reason for detonation is premature combuston of the fuel. 87 burns faster than higher octanes......
