Shift light?
Hi I am new here. I have a 2001 C5 auto. I recently noticed that on the tach there is a light that say 1to4 Shift. I was wondering if I put it into first and punched it would that light act as a shift light? If not what is it for?

The 1to4 light is for manual trans cars. It lights up when the car 'suggests/makes you' you shift from 1st to 4th when slowly accelerating from a stop...it is a way to get around the gas guzzler tax by chevy i think. Most everyone gets it bypassed as it is a pain in the butt to drive with.
In auto cars, i dont think there is a use for it. I know when you get the car tuned or if you have a hand held tuner you can set that light to come on a set RPM (so yes basically a shift light). I know this is the case for manual cars so someone else with an auto can maybe give their input on it

You do not want to manually shift those auto trans. It will destroy the tranny down the road. They were not made to shift. Specially these 4L60E's. They are weak when shifting. Have it built or go with a 700r4 and you can shift it...

I have never, and do not expect that "1 to 4" shift light to ever go on as I have the A4. I have however, noticed the "Shift" light go on on my HUD when I'm hauling *** from 3rd gear to 4th gear and the tach is up near redline, that I have seen and wondered why it would come up on the HUD when I have an A4. I don't look at the guages as I'm cookin' as this is happening, if you know what I mean . . .

your A4 does have a shift light in the Hud, It does come on if you take each gear up high enough, So it acts like a shift light... Also ive been shifting my car anytime i want to ( which is every time i leave the light) for over 2 yrs and so far i haven't had a problem..

I have never, and do not expect that "1 to 4" shift light to ever go on as I have the A4. I have however, noticed the "Shift" light go on on my HUD when I'm hauling *** from 3rd gear to 4th gear and the tach is up near redline, that I have seen and wondered why it would come up on the HUD when I have an A4.
