An X-pipe will improve the sound over the stock H. With your abilities and equipment, you could splice in a generic X and save quite a bit of money. Cats are worth quite a bit of money at salvage yards,,they salvage the platinum and other precious metals. Here in the St.Louis area there has been a rash of cat thefts. You'd be throwing money away gutting them.Electric cut outs let you change/adjust volume at will, even with the cats. The cats are not very restrictive to begin with.

as far as sound goes....Gutted cats have drone, and don t sound as crisp as a catless H or X pipe.

I thought about doing that but wasn't for sure if it would be worth the work.......
So if i remove the cats and add a generic x-pipe. I will have a awesome, loud, mean sound with no drone?
I then replaced the catalytic converter shells with the correct pipes. It sounds a whole lot better than it did with hollow canisters. I had drone that was out of this world, and a buzzing sound in certain RPM ranges that was just about to drive me up the wall. The replacement pipes give it a lot more uniform sound, and it really helped. I also added the two pieces of brace metal in between the pipes. I would suggest doing it the right way the first time. I had to put my car back up on jack stands and pull the midpipe again to do this replacement. Took me most of the day saturday. I put it back in Sunday.
I have gutted out cats and have check engine light on.Code P0420 and P0430 at DTC .With check engine light on I can't get an inspection on my
99 FRC.Now I brought the car that way not knowing, now I have to purchase new cats at 900 bucks so be aware
The rear 02 sensors can be programmed out by a tuner, to get rid of the SES light.
They are only there to tell the ECM that the cats are working properly. The front 02 sensors actually tell the ECM to adjust fuel mixture based on what they read

Post in the parts section and ask if anyone has a stock exhaust system, with cats, for sale and then install those on yours. I suspect there may be several who are looking for a place to dump the entire system just to get it out of their garage. I know I was.

What kind of performance gain (if any) can one expect with adding an X pipe? Or is it only sound?
I want headers but they will probably have to wait, i already have Borla Stingers and was thinking about the x pipe too, if its worth it.
The x-pipe will get rid of much of the motorboat sound but do little for performance unless it's mounted just off the headers, which they hardly ever are.
