Default LS1, LS2, LS3, LS6,7,whatever...???

Ok, very new to Corvette world and I'm still perplexed as to what all the LS identifications really mean. I've learned that the higher the number the higher the performance, but, really, what does it all mean. Obviously there are certain levels with each higher number ??? Help please.

Its just an engine code. And the higher the number doesnt mean higher performance. It does in the case of LS7 and LS9 but the LS3 has more power than the LS6. LS1 came is all the C5's except the Z06 and it came with the LS6. LS2 is in the '05-'07 C6, LS3 in the '08-'09 C6, LS7 in the C6 Z06, and the LS9 in the C6 ZR1.

If they'd also offered Rat motors in the C5s we could get REAL confused.
