Default Column Lock Bypass

I know there is tons of information here about the column lock problem, but please give me a condensed explanation. Just bought my 97 automatic with 46K miles. Claim history report says car had J6355 Powertrain Control Module Transmission Reprogramming done at 20K miles on 3/30/2000. Also, car had V1153-04006 Install Harness Kit - Automatics Only with 89023816 Harness K installed at 40K miles on 6/2/05. I can hear the powered lock pin on start up, but the lock plate appears to be gone (wheel will turn when key is off). Can the 2 mph default saftey still occur? Do I understand correctly that I should still install a CLB? Does the CLB replace the K harness? What do I need to do to determine if a CLB is already installed? Thanks!

Thanks for the great Reply! After reading posts on this topic before and after reading the above reply, I think I finally understand. Off to get a CLB and find a tuner!

Just be sure to remove the Harness K relay wiring before you install the aftermarket CLB relay. I think some people have not realized they had the extra harness and plugged the CLB into the harness.

If you have had the lock plate removed, and it sounds like you do since it doesn't lock but you can hear the column lock motor run, all you need is to program the fuel cutoff to 255 mph and you are okay. Then a failure can't hurt you.

WRONG ! IF you car has been reprogramed for 2 mph fuel cutoff (if the column lock doesn't give the correct response) you could be limited to 2mph in the case of a malfunction. Malfunctions are common with GM's hardware (relay failures).
