Default a/c stopped working completely

I was at a light this morning and my a/c stopped working completely. I thought I noticed a smell but that could have been the car in front of me. I just checked the pressure on the low side and it was extremely high 160-170psi. When I turn the a/c on I can hear the compressor click and engage, then i hear a series of random clicks (not as loud as the initial click) until I turn the a/c off. Is the compressor shot?

Low side pressure should be only about 30-40 lbs.
Something is definately wrong. Get it looked at professionaly.

anyone know what might be wrong? Im guessing it has to be something in the compressor but any guesses would be appreciated!

Could have a clogged expansion valve/orifice tube. For the low side pressure to get that high, I would think something is clogged somewhere.

Was the low pressure reading taken with the car running? If the car was off it would be normal for the suction pressure to be that high because the pressure will equalize in the system until the compressor runs again. Does the compressor cycle on and off quickly? If so it means the refrigerant charge is low. You may need to leak check the whole system, repair the leak and top off the refrigerant if so.

Ya the reading was taken with the car started and A/C "on". After the initial "CLICK" of the compressor, I hear a bunch of clicks that don't stop until I turn the A/C off. It could be what your saying, low pressure right at the point where its turning on and off constantly. Im going to have it looked at asap.

Hi There:
I would check the a/c condenser for blockage, debris or damage. Its located in front of your radiator.
If you had a leaking battery terminal in the past. Start the engine & turn the a/c on. Listen for a hissing sound at the battery area. If you hear it you have a vacuum supply hose leak. This occurred from the battery acid that has eaten through the hose.Turn the engine off remove the battery & the battery box.You will see the supply line going to the reservoir. Its about 4" in towards the rear of the car standing in front of the battery box. You can buy this hose from Motormite Automotive. Its called vacu-tite size 1.4" plastic hard line.
If you take it to a shop & the system will not take a charge then the compressor requires replacement.Hopefully its not that.
