Default 04 z?

well i have a friend with an 04 Z and tonight i was riding in it and noticed these black boxes above the seat belt? i have an 01 and know that they are not in mine, and i was with another friend tonight in his 02 and he too did not have them? my question is what the hell are they?

Those are energy absorbing materials to help with meeting head impact criteria that are established by the federal government. The 2004 Vettes are the only C5 Vettes that had to meet this criteria so this was how GM chose to meet the requirement without a major redesign. The C6 Vette was new in 2005 and the totally redesigned interior did a much better job of integrating the energy absorbers.

My 03 has them as well. Not sure how the head would be helped by those things. If the seat back fails the person's head will go almost anywhere.

I was told it was a bumper for when you are wearing a helmet, less twisting of the head when cornering real hard.
