changing anti-freeze
wrinkles
If the block has 100% water, just add 6 quarts of pure Dexcool first, then add the last 2 quarts of water.
OR, you could add 4 quarts of pure Dexcool, then finish with 50/50 mix.
(you didn't already buy the pre-diluted Dexcool did you?)
If you have not already done the flush with water, and you did not push the antifreeze to the 5 year limit, I would just drain the 8 quarts and if it looks clean, just add 8 quarts of the 50/50 mix.
I never let my Dexcool go over about 2-3 years, so I just replace what I can drain without flushing the whole system. The antifreeze also lubricates the water pump, so I don't really like to run pure water even for short periods of time or drain all the liquid out of the pump while it is hot.

with Texhawk0. He is right on the money. If you flush the system using water, you will end up with 4 or a little more quarts of water in the block. Need to add 100% Dex Cool for about 4 quarts ( resulting a near 50 50 mix in the cooling system) and then top off with a 50 50 mix..........
If you drain the engine block by way of the drain plugs (and I am assuming there are the two standard 9/16 plugs above the oil pan & center of the block like the older model small block/Chevy), do you find leakage problems after reinstalling the plugs?

On the c5 cooling system there are 2 engine block drains. The one on the left side is located at the engine mount bracket & the one on the right side is located behind the starter. You cannot access these drains plugs with the engine installed in the car. This means you can only flush the cooling system.
