you would think it would be set a lot lower than that... maybe its just me but with my 1970 nova i never had temps above 190 and if i did i was on the side of the road overheating... now i know their completely diff motors (old school 350 Vs. LS1) but are they ment to run that hot?

The newer cars run hotter with the emissions they have, I sent out my ECU to Chuck CoW for the Christmas mail order tune special he was running and he did a great job, I have a 160 stat and I think my fans come on now around 185-190. It wasn't uncommon for my car to run around 215-220 here in the Nevada summer.

With the HVAC off, they will turn on at 226 in series mode or low speed. At 235, they'll turn on in parallel mode or high speed unless its been tuned in whatever way and the setpoints were changed.

For a 1998 automatic, the stock fan setpoints are as follows:

Fan1 on at 226.4, off at 219.2
Fan2 on at 236.4, off at 227.3

Computers have done amazing things for closely controlling things like engine temperature.

Your old-skool engine relied on the thermostat, the efficiency of the radiator, and probably a clutch-type fan bolted to the water pump. That's it...where the actual temps resided depended on the performance and combination of those 3 items.

Today, those 3 items still exist...with the exception of the computer-controlled electric fans.

The normal (moving) engine temps are still the same as old-skool...dictated by radiator efficiency, and thermostat rating.

Only the stopped/idling temps are controlled by the fan actuation. And the difference being, is you can now allow the engine to run much hotter, while still having very tight control of exactly HOW hot it gets.

On a C5 in stock form, there is no reason to be concerned about 220, even 230* temps. If you see it go over 235, then there is likely a problem with the cooling system. If not, it's still well within the range of control, and should be considered normal.

ok so no concern for 230* temps that i have been seeing a lot!!! but lets say i wanted to get a computer tune anyways....( to also lower the fan turn on temps) would a tune even be worth the money on a stock motor? all i have is a vararam and cat-back exhaust.

If you are done with it and have no plans to do any further mods, then yeah, a good tune will get you what you want.

If you are thinking about anything else down the road...headers, cam, blower.etc Then probably not worth spending the $ on a tune now.

Are you getting confused between cold air intake temperatures and coolant temperatures?

Here is the info:

C5 Cooling Fans Operation

The low speed cooling fan is commanded on when the coolant temperature reaches 108°C (226°F). It is turned off if the coolant temperature lowers to 104°C (219°F). The high speed cooling fan is commanded on when the coolant temperature reaches 113°C (235°F). It is turned off if the coolant temperature lowers to 108°C (226°F). When the A/C is on and the coolant temperature reaches 85°C (185°F), the low speed cooling fan will be turned on at vehicle speeds less than 56 kPh (35 mph).

I mean, from your earlier post,

"ok so if i want the car at lower temps....( better power) i need to get computer tuned?"

are you under the impression that lower coolant temps will result in more power?
