I have been using a battery maintainer type device for the last several years with no problems. However, the car has always been kept in the garage during this time. I have to store the car outside for the next few months while I work on my garage makeover. So, I purchased a waterproof (1.25 amp) battery tender. To test it out, I attached the red alligator clip to the positive post, and attached the black alligator clip to a nut that was attached to the body wall (rather than to the engine block) and plugged in the unit. I got a rapidy blinking amber light on the battery tender.
I contacted Deltran (the manufacturer). They told me the instructions are incorrect for the waterproof model and that I should attach the the black alligator clip directly to the negative terminal, (rather than to a ground).
Why should that make a difference? Maybe a didn't have it properly grounded?
I'd feel confident following the manufacturers advice in any event. And I didn't realize they had a water proof version of the BATTERY TENDER PLUS.
I've been using the same (DELTRAN) BATTERY TENDER PLUS float charger in my various cars since '95. It hasn't failed me yet. I use the short quick disconnect lead with the ring terminals at the battery terminals, leave the hood closed and run the leads down through the engine compartment.

I'd agree that maybe the attachment point you used was not a good ground. Do what the manufacturer says and hook it directly to the battery. That's how I attached mine and it always worked.
Well, I switched the attachement points and hooked the alligator clips directly to the battery posts. When I plugged it in, I got a solid amber light and then shortly thereafter, a solid green light.
I guess I am back in business
I just wonder how many more years I can get from this 01 AGM battery
