Default Wheelhop at the track

Hey guys... 04 Z06, LT Headers, X-Pipe w/Hi-flow cats, Vararam CAI and powerduct, Predator tune

Made 7 passes at the strip today 2 in 12.40's @116, 3 in 12.50's @ 115, and a 12.70 and 12.80 @ 115 also.
60' times were crappy from a best of 2.02 to a worst of 2.16.
Starting line rpm for the best 2200-2400, up to 2600-2800.

Higher rpms induced severe wheelhop in 1st and 2nd, lower rpm's were slightly better but always had wheelhop in the 1st 2 gears.
I thought I was letting the clutch out fast but these 55 year old legs might not be as quick as they used to be
I talked to 2 other "Z" guys there (both running slower ET's than me) they said they weren't having any wheelhop and they were both launching (stock Goodyears like myself) at 2800-3200.
Any ideas guys? Am I actually slipping the clutch too much...or letting it out too fast??? With trap speeds 115.8-116.7 I know there's 12.0's in her I hope!
I need to eliminate wheelhop which will help my 60' times

OK guys...lay it on me!

Thanks,
Jim

The best way to eliminate wheel hop is to invest in some good drag radials. I would try to find two more 17"x9.5" Z06 front wheels and use them on the rear with 275/40/17 Mickey Thompson ET Street radials for a little more side-wall flex. Consistent wheel hop at the track will end up costing you your differential. With that said your 04' Z with the mods listed should be in the 11s with drag radials.

Wheel hop is caused by spinning the tires. Try backing off even more on the launch. Ranger has some good launch techniques. Do a search and I'm sure you'll find the post. Good luck.

Thanks guys...DR's are deffinitely in the future, right now it's just the stockers.

I did notice that the more I lowered the rpm's the better it was, and the shift into 2nd I need to try and roll into the throttle instead of what comes naturally "pedal to the metal"

I've printed out Ranger's tips and will try to emmulate them...as you all know at the line it's hard not to give it yer all.

Thanks again guys!

There are hundreds of ways wheel hop occurs, you might want to do an advanced search on C5 boards and search for titles only on "Wheel Hop". Be prepared to spend a few hours reading!

I would start off with having a simple alignment done to confirm you have a good starting point. Plenty of people running stock tires with no wheel hop.

I have a 02 C5 Z06 with Kooks LTs, Highflow cat Xpipe, Corsa cat back, Vararam Ram air intake, and retune. 380rwhp.

I ran it at the 1/4 mile for first time this past wed, I have had the car about 3 months. Running the stock Goodyear run flats.

i let the air out of the tires to 24 which i think was to little i think 28 worked better for me.

i have been leaving a 3G at the line

crappy traction at this track

R/t.004
60' 2.051
1/8 8.030 @ 93.60
1/4 12.227 @ 118.35

this car is capable of 11's i believe, I would spin when shifting to 2 and chirp in third. plus my bad 60ft time

I have ran the 1/8 mile one time before running the 1/4

60ft 1.93
1/8 7.93 @93

I am going to just run some better street tires to get me there! if you want to really run good get the Mickey Thompson et streets like silientfright said. They work really good.

I also was running tires at 24/25 psi. I talked with a young fella there with an 04 Z, he said he was leaving at 2800-3000 with no wheelhop. I think maybe I was feathering the clutch or slipping it, I'm not sure, but I know if I can get rid of that on my street tires then my 60' times will improve and et's will follow suit.

Thanks...good suggestions guys...I'll see what the next outing produces. I need to practice and get consistent...I have a grudge match coming up with an 08 Shelby GT 500

From the numerous times I've done holeshots and run her thru the gears on the backroads, or just playing around I never experienced wheel hop.

At the track was the first time it had happened, and it was everyone run in both 1st and 2nd gear. Stock goodyears (6500 miles) were set at 24-25 psi.

Back when i decided that I wanted to see what my car would do in the 1/4, I bought an extra set of wheels to put on a set of drag radials. I figured, that if I'm going to be putting the car at max performance, I wanted some tires that would give me the best E.T.'s. With the add ons that I had put on, I figured to get into the 11's. Once I accomplished that I have been waiting for the next speed mod. I'll be putting in a built 3:90 @ the end of the month, along w/ a trans/diff brace. This fall when the weather is a bit cooler, I'll see if I can hit the mid 11's. There's no end in sight w/ this money pit!

04Z performance; Ziptie mod,corsa xpipe,borla straight pipes,hurst shortthrow,Throttle body by-pass

and also my tires (stock F1 supercars) are in need of changing BAD but to a suprise they actually gripped better than i thought..

i was staying consistant at 13.0 and 13.2s for the first few runs launching at 2500-2600

my worst run was 13.5 when i launched at 2800 and had bad spinning..never wheel hopped tho..

my bestrun was 12.7 at 114mph when i launched at 2400..my reaction time was at .096..I didnt see you when i ran that!! right when i grabbed the ticket im like WHERES THE COMMEMORATIVE GUY!! I BROKE 12s hahah

my 60s were all at 2.1s cept for the 13.5 run i had a 2.3

As previously stated, wheelhop can occur for various reasons. Wheelhop is caused by the tires intermittently gaining and loosing traction. Excessive spin is much better than wheelhop. The OEM F1 SC tires are capable of some outstanding 60's. Tire pressure can be varied from 24 to 26.5 psi. I recommend a strong burnout to thoroughly heat up the tires. As staed by Ranger, a quick clutch release within the first 10' and a smooth feed of the throttle is necessary. Depending on the track prep, I would launch somewhere between 2800 and 3700 rpm. My technique of clutch release only differed from the above by feeding throttle near the top of the clutch release. With excellent track prep, mid 1.7x 60's are possible and 1.8x to low 1.9x being the norm with moderate prep.
Good luck.

BTW- Drag radials can still wheelhop and if you dead hook, things may break. Be careful since you will need to relearn the process.
With bolt-ons, I have cut mid 1.4x 60's.

yep that's me...stock with a couple bolt ons...no internals.
Glad you made those 12's I knew you were going to do it!
Your trap speeds were good, plus your launch was much better than mine. Youth vs. age I guess Nice going...hope to see you there again sometime...looks like rain this Sat/Sun though.

Thanks for the advice Gary> I know you and Ranger (and others ) are the real deal here when it comes to the 1/4 pounders!
I'll keep practicing and try and find that sweet spot off the line.
