Default c5 question

about to buy my first vette. I was looking at a 97. I have been told a set of tires will cost me around $1,000.00 and that the tires only last 10-12k per year. can someone verify>? The car will be my daily driver and the costs of tires like this could be pretty bad

stock c5 sized tires can likely be had for under $700. your driving style will dictate how ling the last. my 18k mile z06 has the original tires though they are very light.

cut back else where if the tires seem pricey. the c5's worth the sacrifice else where...

You can get tires anywhere from around $600 up to $1500+, just depends on which brand you want to go with. And they can last up to 30K miles or more depending on your driving habits and if the car is well maintained.

C5's are great DD's...You certainly won't be racking up the miles with 60 miles per week..3100 miles per year..Wow that must be nice! I put 3000 miles on mine in a month and a half!

if you maintain it there is no reason it shouldn't go mid 150's...

Or more,,depends on how you drive it and take care of it. Don't just drive and fill with gas,,pay attention to it,change the oil and filter per the DIC %,change the plugs between 50 and 75K and don't run it to redline all the time and you can easily exceed 150K!! these ate tough cars with tough drive trains!! I have a friend that has one with over 120K that sees frequent trips to the strip,,and it's the original unopened motor!

mike,

with any car, once you get into the mid 100's things fail. any car with mileage approaching that will have needed or soon need certain seals, gaskets, tie rod ends, etc. of course all other routine maintenace parts such as belts, hoses, water pumps, etc will have likely already been replaced.

You can never be sure of when a major repair will be needed, but the best way to prevent one is a diligent maintenance schedule.

Have a 02 with 35,000 miles on original tires. Back tires will be replaced soon but fronts still have some life in them.

Check out post #40 by retired Corvette engineer Evil-Twin. He points out that the C5 Corvette was designed with a 200,000-mile target.

http://forums.corvetteforum.com/c5-t...mistake-2.html

Quote below -

The C5 platform was bench marked at 200,000 miles, this was the first of its kind from any other manufacturer, most use 100,000. as their bench mark.. as far as 57K.... it's still a baby... we ran these Ls1/6 engines full out for 800 hours non stop and tore them down and found everything to still be within tolerance.. no manufacturer runs their test mules 800 hours non stop.... 400 hours is a long time... Use the oil life monitor, it works..
There is one thing I will warn you about.. you sold your truck.. and bought an Icon of American heritage.. I often refer to this car as a 100,000 dollars sports car that originally cost 50K.... thanks to GM engineering and product management, keeping the C5 within the budget.
While your truck could haul around all kinds of "Stuff" your C5 will only be good at hauling "***"

Hello and welcome
You need to do some more home work. Your looking at an 11 yr old car.
If your on a shoe string - you might want to wait till you have a bigger cushion in savings. Don't put your self in a hole you can't get out of. JMHO
Good luck

Congrats -- but be sure you have some money set aside for "stuff." These things are tough and great DD's but when things break there is the Corvette tax to consider. Plus, like any high-performance car, some things wind up being pricey due to the engineering involved.

For example, if you are getting the 6-spd, the clutch is not that expensive -- but if you do not have a lift and do your own work, the labor on replacing it at say 100K or so will be expensive. Also, R&R on the oil pressure sensor is very labor intensive and many C5's lose them at some point. Not to scare you -- you are getting the all-time greatest performance bargain IMHO -- but you can't expect to run it on a shoestring like a Civic or Corolla.

Finally, you will find this Forum WILL save you $$$$$$ if you listen to the experts (and it won't take you long to figure out who they are). Certainly saved this mechanical ignoramous plenty...

Dude...I put at least 60 miles a day on my 02.Just consider it therapy and you will be saving 80.00/hour every time that you drive it.Some on this forum are driving cars with well over 200,000 miles
