My '99's AC was not putting out any cold air. As the car is ten years old I figured it was out of gas. I took it to a local auto repair shop here in town for service. I had not been there before. Tony, the owner checked the charge, added a dye to see if it is leaking, and refilled the refrigerant. He worked for about 30 minutes. He said to check the system connections for the dye to see if it is leaking. Total cost: Labor $25.00, Material $30.00. I got my car repaired for $55.00,
AMAZING !
They are prone to leak at the compressor too, and that is what mine is doing after a dye test. Shop wanted around 1k to do the compressor. I will just keep charging mine up for that price! If u find u do have a leak, the 99 runs on r134a, and can easily be filled at home in a short time. If you want to know how and where to get the tools send me a pm sometime. (tools are around $20 or so, and a 12oz can of refrig. is about $6. empty to full the system holds 1.5 lbs of coolant).
Pretty good for someone with a brick and motars place.
There is a guy here in Syracuse that sets up shop either at an oil change place or a local DIY car wash that charges $40 bucks for a charge including diagnostics. Last year my mother-inlaws Fleetwood was blowing hot air for $20 bucks he confirmed the system was charged and the compressor was working but a relay had blown. Another $20 at NAPA for a relay and she was back in business.
Where do you live? It may be cheaper to ship my car there, fixed and ship it back here than it will be to have some shop do it for me in my local area.
