Default Non-engine differences between Z06 and regular corvettes?

I know the engine in the C5 Z06s is hopped up versus the regular corvettes, but can anyone summarize the differences for me other than the engine?

On a different note-----what changes did they make between the 2001 and 2002 z that added the 20hp?

Thanks a bunch.

The differences minus the engine.

The Z06 was lighter
A slight difference in body appeaance with the brake ducting
Suspension was different.
Gearing might be not sure.
Exhaust system

Differences between 01 and 02 for more power.

I believe the heads were different not positive.

When you say regular corvettes, I'm assuming you are speaking of coupes and verts.

The years 1999 and 2000 introduced a new model, the FRC, or Fixed Roof Coupe. There were a few design differences that were different with the FRC, mostly to try and introduce an 'inexpensive' corvette. Surveys proved this to be an unattractive option for buyers so the FRC was set up a certain way to make it a more performance oriented version. The roof line was shortened to shave a little weight off and there was a chassis stiffener added right under the read window. It was fitted with the Z51 suspension which was the high performance suspension then. You could only order them with a black interior and a 6 speed manual trans.

Sales were pretty good for FRC's that year but dropped off in 2000. In order to boost sales they decided to further enhance the performance of the FRC by upgrading the suspension, adding the Z06 interior package, further lightening enhancements, a beefed up drivetrain, and a more powerful motor, the LS6.

The 405hp LS6 was put in in 2002. The 2002 LS6 had the same heads as the 2001 LS6 (243 castings), but the cam lift and duration was made larger and the compression went up a few 10ths. There were also some computer upgrades.

The 'beefier' driveline consisted of a larger torque tube, different gearing in the transmission, and shot-peened gears in the rear. All manual transmissions for all corvette C5's came with a 3.42:1 rear axle ratio.

Here is press release on 2001 vettes, that talks about differences between regular vettes and Z06.

http://www.corvetteactioncenter.com/.../2001over.html

The Z06 has a different body, different transmission, stiffer suspension, and lighter weight than other corvette models.

Wasn't the glass used thinner to save weight? Shocks and sways were different too.

So what you are saying is that the FRC went from being the poor mans Vette to the rich mans Vette basically? LOL

All C5's have the same hood from Bowling Green with the exception of the 2004 CE Z06 which has a carbon fibre hood. It's the same shape as all C5 hoods and weighs in 10.6 lbs lighter than all other C5 hoods.

Z06 = no fog lights, no topless option, and no sport seats - who came up with that idea

ArKay99 is correct. The "poor mans" C5 turned out to be lighter & stiffer; and was the perfect platform for a more performance oriented C5.

The sport seats have the opening in the top of the seats allowing shoulder harnesses (real shoulder belts) to pass through.

It is against most track and racing organizations regulations for your harness belts to pass "around" the seats. They must pass "through" them......

So, it IS pretty strange to have the Z06 be the ONLY C5 that can not be ordered with the Sport seats from the factory...

Discovery HD Theater airs a show that details the building of a C6 Z06 in the factory (Modern Marvels?). It shows how the current Gen looks the same but is really a different car from the hydroformed frame to the lightweight rear hatch glass to the handbuilt and signed LS7.

Tranny differences (I didn't see details posted yet) consisted of the MN6 for the regular Vette and the MN12 for the Z06. The MN12 gave the Z a more aggressive 1-3 gear and resulted in the gearing being closer to 3.90s even though the rear ratio stayed 3.42
