Default Question on Supra vs. Corvette power

Could someone tell my why a TT supra makes so much more power than a TT corvette. The supra motors are a 3.4L V6 while a C5 is a 5.7L V8. It logically makes more sense that a corvette should be making more power, but it is common to see a 1200+ hp street legal supra on the road at any given time.

Anyone know why this is the case?

That's on C16 first of all. They don't make much more than 500rwhp on pump.

Second their block is built stronger from the factory so they dump all their mod money into the turbo and fuel systems needed. If you forge the bottom end and run good fuel we can make that power as well.

I wouldn't call a 1200HP MKIV Supra "common". Most heavy-hitter APU guys are in the 600-700rwhp range on C16. There are a lot of plusses with the Supra like forged factory internals, the I-6 makes packaging a large turbo fairly easy, and they have been around a long time and came factory FI.

Not a TT expert but my guess would be that the smaller cylinders are more capable of handling 18-20lb of boost.

On the other hand there are plenty of 1000+ hp Vettes out there.

Just a guess.

Real easy to slap on a large single turbo on a Supra and make sick boost in excess of 35 lbs and our V8s not so easy. Yes Vettes are breaking the 1000 hp level now and with the LSX block we should see some soon for the track with 1500+ hp

At those levels of boost on the Supra they do not last long, just look up Boost Logic Supra's out of Austin Texas, SW has several and his Black one is a 7 second and 246 mph at the standing mile

have you seen some of the dyno numbers on this forum some guys are well over 1000 hp on pump gas. Theres even a LS7 solstice pushing for 1100 rwhp on the solstice forum right now. With the introduction of the LS3/LS7 there will be a lot more 1000hp vettes on the steet.

To the OP

First we need to get some of your facts strait.

1) the supra is a 3.0 inline 6cyl. Not a 3.4 v6.....

2) most big hp supras have a single turbo conversion not the stock twins.

1200hp is not all that uncommon for chevy cars and trucks. I'm seeing more and more in that range -- take your 20% driveline losses and that's 1000rwhp. Shoot, I wonder if anyone posting here has a tt vehicle that can do that on the street

Really, it comes down to 2 things. Money, and how much "street" you are willing to give up to run that high. Sure, my truck is street legal -- it even smogs with the right tune in it.

Do I consider it a safe all weather vehicle?
Hell no.

Do I drive it on the street?
Yes... when its running.

Do I think 1000rwhp is way too much?
Yes, definitely. I will never build a car for street duty with that much again. In fact, I'm retooling the truck to have less for normal duty. Hell 800 is probably way too much.

How much boost will it take?
around 22psi

How can your engine handle that?
the old setup (408) was 8.6:1 compression, and I run methanol (oh and 93 octane! Take that supras!!)

If you really want your vette to run that much hp it can be done and can be street legal, but just like those supras, you probably won't drive around with the same tune and setup that hit those dyno numbers. Not if you want to enjoy driving it around...

Um, MK4 Supra engines are inline 3.0TT engines. All of those 700+ hp guys are using race fuel for their setups. And yes those guys are running MASSIVE single turbo units. Tuning will be a large amount of it, plus the 2JZ block has ben proven to be a bullitproof design. They can run over 40lbs easy.
