Default Nitrogen

My wife left her Mustang at the dealer for it"s 3,000 mile service.

For an extra $25 they filled her tyres with nitrogen to (in their words) prolong tyre life.

I was crap at science but I do know the air is 78% nitrogen so what's the deal with nitrogen in the tyres?

I read that it can keep race car tyres a little cooler but surely the difference in road cars cannot justify the change?

Your opinions?

It's just another dealer method to make money. It's a waste of money.

I just went with nitrogen a few months ago and haven't had to add any more to the tires so far. It will hold the pressure better, that's about it. And for me, that's enough. I don't like having to mess with the tire pressure all the time. So far, it's been rock solid. My dealer offers free top ups whenever needed and 10% off new tires. I doubt I'll buy my tires from them when the time comes, but I like the more consistent tire pressure that I'm seeing. Went with nitrogen for the CTS, too. Same reason. Chump change.

There was a big surge of interest like a year ago,but people have learned it's all BS. Not enough difference to justify the cost.

I believe Nitrogen has a better coefficient of thermal expansion than Oxygen. Great for women (and men) who don't like to keep on top of their tire pressures.

I was at a indoor strictly corvette show at Atlantic city a couple of weeks ago,and they
had a booth pushing nitrogen, they also said it holds presure better, and gives the car a better ride. Myself i have no clue if its better

You know, it's funny. After getting the nitrogen, I felt like I was getting a slightly better ride. When I inquired about it here, everyone told me that it was all in my mind. Be that as it may, nitrogen does hold the pressure better. That much I can verify.
