typical japanese car scissor jack, can be found in the trunk of most nissan's and toyotas! Whoever did that to their vette will probably find a nice crack in their bodywork!
I found an aluminum scissors jack from a Mazda RX7 (also Porsche) that I carry in my car. It'll collapse down low enough for most C5 cars, weighs about 4#, and is very stable. You can find them easily on EBAY and many salvage yards...

I have one like that I bought at Kragen for about 12 bucks. Mine looks to be a bit smaller than that one It goes under my car with room to spare, & my car is lowered 3 1/2" from ground .
Thanks for the link. I tried a search (or two) but I was using the wrong "key" words. I was just very curious, never thought of using one actually. I just never seen anything like that before. I have the compressor/sealer in my Z so that with AAA I should be ok if ever the need arises. Thanks again!

Look at this thread. It shows the same image as yours. I found many past threads using search and keywords "bmw aluminum jack c5"...

Not much point in having that jack in the trunk when the car doesn't have a spare tire. I suppose if you are also keeping that GTO spare in your car on a trip it might be useful. I only lift mine with a real jack like the one slvr06 posted.
If I get a flat I'll just call the auto club. Got to get some use out of them for my annual payment.
Having a jack in the trunk w/o a spare is an option. I carry the Z06 compressor, tire plugs and tools of all types. That insures I should never need them.
Carrying a 4# aluminum scissors jack would allow me to lift and inflate a tire and/or remove the tire/wheel to make a repair. That's better than doing it laying on my back beside the roadway under the rockers or fender...after rolling the car trying to find the puncture.

I agree with you and slvr06 up to a point. If your going to work on the car, then you need a real jack but, it is also a good idea to have some type of jack (IMO) in your car in case you need to get underneath as hotwheels57 stated.
I also have AAA, but if I can fix the problem right there then I rather do so instead of waiting on the auto club
