The talk about your own insurance being a lot cheaper than AAA is, I believe, because your insurance only covers the autos on your policy, whereas AAA covers any auto you happen to be with. Your can be with your friend/family in their auto and you're covered. AAA covers the member, not the particular auto.
The basic tow with AAA is 7 miles, then 100, or 200. Where I'm at, anyway.

I've been a Triple A member for so many years I can't remember. Used to use the Triptic feature where they map your route and send it to you, so that's way before Yahoo maps, Tomtom's, etc. Is it worth it? Hard to say. I've had them send out someone to unlock two cars, and again for gas once. The only tow was kind of a long story. Let's say it was an ex girlfriends vehicle that came up missing but was found a week later 130 miles from home. Triple A had it delivered in a few hours. It's also why she's an ex.
We've had AAA for many years. Their service is only as good as the towing service they send out! Hopefully, if you ever need towing, you'll get a driver that knows what he's doing.
Myself, I have added a small compressor and it's attached can of "goop" to my trunk. I'll sacrifice a pressure sensor to get home damage free!
I've thought about AAA and also just received another offer package in the mail. (Interestingly right before Memorial Day and the summer driving season - Not that driving season isn't year round here in Florida).
Anyway, so far I have opted to stay with my insurance company and made sure I had flat bed towing covered. I don't really drive cross-country and when I do go for a long ride in my Corvette, it's usually with my other Corvette Club buddies. I also switched to non run-flats and carry a Z06 -like tire repair kit.
Another suggestion I have is that based on which non run-flat tire you have, obtain a list of qualified dealers and either keep it or a weblink on your smartphone, PDA, etc. or a printout in the glove box. That way if you do need to replace/repair a tire, you know who to call. Perhaps even load the list onto your NAV system if you have one.
