Hey Guys,
I need some help on this one. I bought my C5 from the Chev dealer in LaPlace 7/08 and also bought the warrenty on it. I had a killer stero system in it with all amps ect on the back wall behind the seats.I removed the system from the car and there was a fuel smell. I guess the person that the dealer bought it from put the amps in did not know what he was doing. He put a long PK screw into the fuel tank and it was leaking fuel all over the back.Damm good thing I caught this, but should the dealer know that nothing should go on the back walls? I went back to the dealer and they looked at me like I had 3 heads. What should I do??

That is so funny that you said that. I just did the same thing on my car. ARGH!!! I did everything right, put one amp behind each seat while I made sure that I put the screws in the ribs under the carpet until I put in the cap. I would be damn if my DUMBA$$ didn't put the screws right into the gas tank. Everything was fine until a few weeks later when I moved the amps because I wasn't happy with the location of the amps and then I could smell gas. Uh oh.
What I did is cut a small square opening in the sheetmetal and patched the holes and recovered the area with dynamat.
I would say the person that the dealer bought the car from. I went in,told them what I was looking for and the called me right back and said the had a perfect C5 with a new 4000.00 stero system it.They pushed that it was a keller system...no Sh-t.
I am going to try and get the dealer to fix it. I spoke to a Lawyer and he said that this goes under selling a unsafe car weather they knew it or not, also under training of personal.
Possibly the dealer will fix it but seems highly unlikely
You could drop the tank and find the hole and getting a STAINLESS STEEL screw of equal or slightly larger size and some RTV sealant or Plastic Epoxy you could make a good plug!
There was a set of fuel tanks for sale in our For Sale section here on the forum but I don't know if he'll seperate, they also had the pumps in them too and they were cheaper than the dealers price
The Plastic Epoxy is pretty awesome stuff and you might want to give it a go with the STAILESS STEEL screw
Thanks Matt
I know how to fix it it just the fact if it had leaked on to the amps and went off either my son or myself would not be here. Just kinda pissed me off. And after the car was burned down and nothing left nobody would know how it started. JMHO
The car was inspected buy their shop personnel and they should have know that nothing can be screwed into the back wall. Sorry I can't spell anymore.
You can screw into the back wall as long as you dont use a screw long enough to go into the tank or place something behind the carpet. I personally can't see how the dealer could be held responsible if they didn't install the system. The only way they could have known is if the pulled the carpet up and pulled the system out themselves but maybe you will get lucky and they will help you out. Good luck!
The dealer doing the visual inspection would never know how long the screw is for one, but also have access to inspect this without taking off the protection plate that covers the bottom of the gas tank. I am sorry but you would be lucky if the dealer helped you fix this. It seems to me that you are on your own. Good luck though.
One last thing, the attorney and his advice is what is wrong with America. That is BS by placing blame on the dealer for an unsafe car. There again is no way to know without taking the plate off and the tank didn't leak as you stated until you took the amps out along with the screw that was in the tank. Same reason I found out my mistake.
G/L thou bro... and my advice is be as nice as possible. People in general will be more likely to help thouse who are nice to them then someone who is an A$$.
Who installed the stereo? Was it the dealer, some young kid at a Best Buy, ???
PS: The Rocketeer used gum to patch a hole in his tank, so that might be an option!
Sorry for your misfortune
Man, when I was like 16 I backed in to a ditch and put a hole in the gas tank. Me, being 16 and full of knowledge, had buble gum in the car. I patched the tank with bubble gum, and by the time I got home the thing was leaking all over again. My parents took the keys from me for a while. end of story.
Good luck with the repairs man. IMHO, I think that you should have looked at the car better and closer before you bought it. Take the tank off and patch it.
