Anyone know the history of the pup cats? I thought I read somewhere that they were only put on the 2001-2002 Z06's. I don't remember them being on my 98, so when were they added to the C5 coupes/vert's?
I looked under a 2004 Z06 and they weren't there but were on a 2004 C5
In 2000, if you have the pup cats, you have a slightly different cam too...which is designed to offset the ~5hp that they eat up.
207/199 .479/.472 vs 209/198 .500/.500, 117 vs 115.5 LSA
I guess after that they got the 5hp by virtue of the LS6 intake on all C5's.
I read also that the 2000 had the biggest cam due to the pup cats.So i hope by going to lt headers and eliminating the pups i get a extra 5hp.Besides the normal gains.already have the ls6 intake

Sweet. Now I need to get an LS6 intake and a tune.
2000 was the year that the "pups" were introduced to meet the LEV ( low emissons vehicle) standards in Kalifornia. The closed coupled converters were added up front of the regular single brick CATs on Kalifornia cars. M/Y 2001 brought the pups across- the -board including my LS6.
The under -the- floor CATs were the same from 1997-2001. As a quick fix to pass the stringent CARB ( Kalifornia Air Resources Board) requirements othe GMPT engineers mounted the "pups" CATs upstream to to control the emissions from initial start up to when the under-the-floor CATs lit off.
This never made much scence to me since all the emissions tests that I've ever had done ( in the SF Bay area of Kalifornia) was always done after the engine was up to operating temperature.
"While the offical HP ratings did not change , the '00 California cars were probably 5 hp short of the '97-'99s because of the "pups". The 2001 M/Y had no deficiencys because of the LS1 had other changes that negated the "pups" power loss.
One of the first mods I did to my '01 Z06 was to swap the entire exhaust for an '02 Z06 . Cost was under $350. GMPT Engineer John Juriga says this swap , plus the '02 Z06 fresh air box ( larger initial opening) was worth 10 hp , two inches less of back pressure and 5 1/2 pounds of weight loss. The '02 CATs are the newer double brick design that flow better and don't require the pups to meet the LEV standards .
