Default oil pump malfunction or sending unit??

Here is the deal.. 0 psi oil pressure on a cold start up for about 10 seconds and then 40psi very quickly.. After warm up I get up to 82 psi oil pressure at 4500 rpm.. Whoh? I know I need to hook up A mechanical oil pressure gauge to the engine block oil port.. Or take it in for warranty work at the dealership. There is some lifter/valvetrain noise on cold start up,, which scares me.. Anyone have any symptoms like this?

the valvetrain noise at startup is normal, the oil in our cars is thin and the top end is usually dry at the first start up of the day. As far as your oil pressure situation it sounds like you have a sticky sending unit or a faulty gauge.

Oil pressure gauge sending units go bad fairly frequently, as you'll find out if you search on the forum. It's a PITA job to replace but not that difficult, but you most likely just need a new sender. The sender is located on the back of the engine behind the intake manifold. You can get your hand back there to feel where it is, but there is no way to remove it without either removing the intake or cutting a hole in the above panel where the wipers are located. Once you are doing the repair you can also find kits to remote mount the sender so that if it happens again it will only take a few minutes to replace.
