I don't see where the service manual calls for draining the block - how is this done?[/QUOTE]

Follow the S shaped hose on your overflow tank down to the block and pull the hose at the block...

Peace
Chip

Chip,

I did that when I installed my DeWitts radiator and while you get more coolant out, the block still has about a gallon of coolant left inside. I ended up reconnecting the hoses, filling the system with de-ionized water, running it until the fresh water had circulated into the block then letting it cool and then drain the system. I repeated this several times until what I was draining out looked like clear water. ie I had greatly diluted the contents still in the block. This process is a PIA and takes forever between the heating and cooling cycles.

I'm inclined to agree with those that suggest that you drain what you can and if it still looks good (ie is not all muddied up) then just refill with a 50 50 mix. I was **** about wanting it all out but I think next time I will go the shorter way. Thank you GM for not making the block plugs accessible. On my C4 I installed drain ***** in place of the block plugs and draining everything was a snap.

If you are only getting one gallon and it's draining slow, maybe you have a plugged radiator or something else restricting flow.

Mine overflowed my 5 quart pan before I could replace it with another 5 quart. I got about 2 gallons out as well.

It should drain out of the radiator and then gravity feed out of the surge tank and some of the engine.

Was the car low on coolant before you drained it?
I got just right @ 2 gallons when I drained the system from the radiator this past spring. Pull the plug completely, and give it time, maybe even raise the rear of the car.
