my 204 Z06 gets the "steering column lock" warning on the dash everytime I turn the key on. I heard they fixed this on the later model C5's? I have never had a problem, but don't want one either.
1. How do I find out if my Z06 was fixed or exempt of this problem? by serial number?
2. Is there an easy fix I can do?
3. Is there a GM website to see if my Z06 is affected by this?
It is very annoying and don't have any Chevy dealers close to me.
The first thing to check is does your column lock when you turn off the key? If not, then a bypass has been installed and/or the lockplate has been removed.
If you want to know what has been done to your car, your best bet is to remove the panel below the steering column and see if a bypass relay has been installed. If it is a GM Harness K relay, then most likely the lockplate has also been removed. If it has an aftermarket column lock bypass relay installed, and you are getting the error message, then your relay may be going bad.
You can find instructions on how to remove the panel and what the relays look like in the sticky at the top of the TECH section.
