ok.. finally getting warm here again. replaced the main battery a few weeks ago. I LOVE not having the service column lock, traction control, and a few other bugs that were coming on because of the crap optima red top. but... over the winter it seems the batt died in my key fob. no problem right? i went to wallyworld and bought another. put it in. programmed it per the manual. worked for 5 mins. then... nothing. reprogrammed again. same thing. it always works for a few minutes. but it never holds the code. i figured it was a bad fob batt. went and bought another overpriced metal circle batt. installed. and its doing the same thing. i doubt both batts are bad.
i do have a second fob that has never worked and ive never used. i installed both batts into that one too and i cant even get it to program at all. i dunno. i took them apart and looked for obvious problems on the mini circuit board. nothing wrong. i made sure the metal contacts that touch the batt were separated from each other and positioned correctly. i made sure the metal to metal contact from the batt half of the fob to the button half were making clean contact.
I went through this same routine with mine. Is yours the passive style remote? People here will tell you that there is nothing wrong with their passive remote systems (older style) and that they work fine, but in my experience I have had nothing but trouble out of them. you can try running the passive switch back and fourth to "clean" the contacts a little, but it most likely won't work.
I went through the exact same thing you are going through. Installed a new battery and my remote would work for a day or two. I finally got sick of it. Went and bought a new remote - $112 at the dealership, and it worked for about a week before the whole system started doing the same thing again.
I finally pulled the trigger and did the '01-'04 newer style non-passive system swap. I bought the receiver and the fob from Gene Culley here on the board -GM Parts House, and spliced it in to my car. I don't have any tire pressure sensors, so if you want those to work you will have to upgrade those as well. I didn't have to though because I don't have any.
Do a search here on the board if you are interested. It costed me about $160 in parts for the receiver and the fob. I removed my interior piece in the back and spliced in the newer receiver, programmed the fob and now all is perfect. I haven't had a bit of trouble since the day I put it in - which was about 6 months ago.
