Default 1,500,000th Corvette

Subject: 1,500,000th Corvette
Date: Wed, 10 Jun 2009 13:52:43 -0500

FOR RELEASE: 2009-06-10
Chevrolet builds 1,500,000th Corvette
Pricing also announced for the 2010 Corvette Grand Sport

DETROIT - At the June meeting of the Greater Atlanta Automotive Media Association, Karen Rafferty, Chevrolet Product Marketing Director, today announced the recent production of the 1,500,000th Corvette at GM Bowling Green Assembly.
"The 1.5 millionth Corvette is a great example of how Chevy is America's Brand," Rafferty said. "For nearly 60 years we have built America's Sports Car and this milestone is a solid proof point."
The 1.5 millionth Corvette, built on May 28, is a white convertible 3LT with red interior and black top (similar to the first, 500,000th and 1 millionth Corvettes built in 1953, 1977 and 1992 respectively). The first Corvette rolled off the assembly line on June 30, 1953.
Rafferty also announced pricing of the all-new 2010 Corvette Grand Sport. Pricing for the Grand Sport coupe is $55,720 and GS convertible is $59,530. Both prices include a $950 destination freight charge.
"The Corvette Grand Sport achieves a 0 - 60 time in less than four seconds, pulls 1.0g on the skid pad and still boasts an impressive 26 highway mpg," Rafferty said. "These numbers are unmatched by any of Corvette's competitors."

I'd love to have a new GS. My birthday is in December if you all want to start collecting to buy me one.

How do they know it's exactly the 1.5 millionth? I'm sure over the production span a couple have slipped through the cracks. Be they prototype cars, damaged cars on the assembly line, paperwork errors (there's numerous accounts of incorrect vin numbers in the first 3 generations)

For all we know, the "special" car was made a month previous and is sitting on some dealer lot.... One of the dealers that got the "Dear John" -sorry we can't renew your franchise agreement.

I'm just thinking of the poor 350,000,000 + in the U.S. that don't have one, not to mention the 6,000,000,000 + in the world that will never get to own one.

I believe GM and Chevy are counting actual VIN's; although I believe a few chasis have slipped out of the factory unaccounted for.

Exactly, like the '63 Grand Sports. Zora Duntov said in the history books they were simply labeled "chassis number 1 through 5" -Are we not to say they aren't Corvettes??? Of course they are.

Etc, etc, etc.

It's nice to get worked up about that white car and what it signifies.... but it's all fluff.. it's sure as heck NOT the EXACT 1.5 millionth actual driving Corvette made.

Good for you GM. Couldn't have been announced at a better time. Hope you get to satisfy 1.5M more customers.

Yes, you are correct, but this is the vehicle being officially recognized by GM as such, and frankly, that's all that really matters in terms of historical note. The semantics really don't matter, because THIS is officially the VIN of record.

Joshua, pleeeaaase. This is no conspiracy. They will only get to claim it once in their lifetime. The bean counters are out adding it all up. It would be a PR nighmare if GM's count is off. I know you better than that.
