Today I got the colom lock message and yes the battery is charged fully. The colom is locked on top of that now for some reason neither one of my keys will turn the ingition switch either. My car is stuck at work with no way of getting it home to work on it any suggestions for getting home beside a tow truck?
The technique lined above wont work until I can get the key to turn I am going to remone the ing. switch.
Can I get a lock smith to fix the the lock or do I need to get a new one from GM? If I get a new one from GM can the key it to the same key I have? Do they need the car to do it or can I just bring them the lock cylinder? Does the lock cylinder or the key have the VIN programed into it?
Ok I got ther entire ignition swith out but I cant remove the lock cylinder from thje switch. While I was messing with it I managed to seperate the switch from the lock cylinder but the springs and pins fell out....
Can I just swap the complete ignition switch and key?
At this point I think your best course of action is to have it towed to the GM dealership before you do any more damage. This problem is rarely the ignition switch. By removing it and taking it apart, you just cost yourself more money.

too late the ingition switch is already out of the car. I have a quote from my local dealer for a new lock cylinder and ignition switch. Just hoping I could find someone on here who has a complete unit I could buy.
Are the VIN's programmed in to the keys/switch somehow?
As far as I know, the VIN is not encoded in the key, the 'chip' in the key is just a resistor that the computer reads to make sure it is the correct resistance. I think there are 15 different resistors that could be used in the key. Your dealership will know which one it is. As for the column being locked, once the ignition is fixed, 8VETTE7 or I can help you with getting the column lock message figured out as 8VETTE7 just helped me diagnose mine. (THANKS AGAIN).
Well got the new Ign. switch in but now everything Electrical is freeked out and the car wont start. I am going to pull it back apart tonigt and see whats up.
No I am not going to take it to the dealer. I will figure it or at least get some advice from forum members and hopefully narrow it down.
OK the freaked out condition is resolved had the 2 plugs on the ingition switch swapped. Now when you put the key in everthing acts normal but when you go to start it everthing goes dead. Like the clutch is not puched in. The clutch switch worked fine before the switch failure any ideas?
