Default ACK!! Rust!

Ok, so I got my car out of storage finally. It's been in a climate controlled garage since last fall. I'm in the process of moving and couldn't keep it at home.

I installed a new set of chrome seat hoops before it went into storage. They are glued in as I didn't/couldn't remove the gas tanks to bolt them down.

Now there's small rust spots on by brand new chrome hoops, both sides, all over. WTF?? The spots are very small, I thought it was dust/dirt at first but when I wiped them of course they didn't go anywhere. The car was covered, windows and top up the entire time.

Anyone have any ideas?

Ultrafine steel wool won't scratch the chrome. After removing the rust spots put a coat of car wax on them and buff.
Next time you store the car put a heavy coat of wax on but don't buff it.

Steel wool on chrome? Yikes... but I'll try it, lightly very lightly. Thanks for the tip

You need 0000 steel wool. The package will say 0, 00, 000 or 0000. You need to get 0000 and nothing like, or it will leave marks.

Before going the steel wool route, I'd take a microfiber towel and some chrome polish..

If you just put thes on before storing it, why wouldn't you call the vendor you got them from and ask for a replacement set?

And this time, ask for the non-Chinese chrome versions.

Also suggest you purchase and use some of those bags you just toss inside the car to absorb moisture.

Chrome should not rust. Sounds like a poor quality chrome plating job if it has pin holes it the chrome that allow the base metal to rust.
I would be calling the company that supplied the hoops.

Do they accept collect calls to Beijing?

Seriously, I agree with you. A bad chrome job (read: cheap) has these sorts of problems, not good ones.

I got them from Corvette South. They seemed to be a good dealer. Still haven't got a reply from them tho....

Oh and they are glued in, can't imagine taking them out would be easy.

Hmmm...This doesn't sound right. I have chrome seat hoops and I live in the center of humidity - Florida. I have never had a problem with them developing rust spots or any other issues with the finish.

I would check again with your vendor and try a chrome cleaner first.

The problem isn't necessarily with the forum vendor, but rather the manufacturer or supplier of the actual item.
Sometimes even the best of vendors may not be aware of any problems unless their customer let's them know.
