Default Side vents loose

On my 2003 convertible, the black plastic "backing" for the side vents (behind the front wheels) seem loose. The driver's side especially seems to have some give. Took the access panel off but it seems this fascia piece is only attached to the front fender wheel area. Is there some way to prop it up to give it more solidity?

Are you talking about the screens(which are aftermarket) that cover the opening behind the front wheel, or the actual black plastic in the openings themselves?

they are designed to have some degree of movement, however it shouldn't be excessively loose.

To tighten them, remove the whee and screws holding the rear section of the front wheel well in place (7mm and 10mm bolts) then tighten the 7mm bolts that hold the plastic in place.

Alternatively, you might also be able to secure the rear of the piece with a portion of double backed mounting tape.

can you remove this black plastic? If so would it better help vent hot air from the engine compartment?

Yeah they are functional like that, they need to move to vent air from the engine compartment.

Yes, you can remove them, but then you get to look down into the fender and normally it is not a pretty sight - can get pretty dirty down there after a few years.

So there is no worries of water getting in and affecting a "computer" there or anything else if you do remove them? Because if they were removes and the screens put in it would function and look better right?

I don't think it would effect the computer, which sits higher than the vents...and the vents point backwards, so you should be fine. But I don't think it will make a huge difference in regards to getting better cooling. Indy

Yep I am talking about the black plastic facia piece. the driver's side has more give than the passenger's but both have a wobble to them.

I just noticed the same thing plus mine was rattling against the fender. The drivers side is tight however. I took the inner wheel well panel off and it appeared that the shield inside the "gill" was positioned correctly. To stop the rattle I put a small dab of silicone between the shield and the inside of the fender and it worked perfect.
