[Z06] Calling all z06/FRC owners: Ever wish you bought a coupe or vert?
#81
When the time came around to FINALLY buy my vette there was no other choice besides a Z!
When you pull up next to anyone whom has any ounce of gearheadism running through their viens, there is always a sense of fear or respect a Z plants in their head...

Verts look great with top down, ugly with top up. Removable roof is a pain to take of and put on. I looked at z06 and never looked again. The body style of the z looks awsome.nothing beats those massive rear wheels and flaired out sides.

I've had both a 99 coupe and now an 02 z06.. The fixed roof is much better looking than the coupe, however I miss the targa top in the fall and spring time. Its all in eyes of the beholder.. When I had the coupe I would envy the FRC cars.. It would be nice if there was a FRC style C5 that you could remove the top off and have the best of both worlds

I was curious to see if there are any z06 / FRC owners on here who, after purchasing their z06 or FRC C5 did you wish you had gotten a coupe or vert instead for the purposes of open air driving?
I'm currently torn between getting a z06 and a coupe- mainly because I'd like to have the ability to take the targa top off on nice days and enjoy the air. I wonder if I buy a z06 if I will feel as though i'm missing out on that open-air element and wish I had gotten a coupe instead.
I like the styling of both and both are in my price range. All out performance is not my main goal with the car, as power from the LSx engines is easy to come by.

I sold my FRC a few years ago and after getting out of corvettes for a while I wanted another one. I fell in love with the luxuries of the C6 and bought an 07 coupe thinking I would love it and got the coupe instead of the C6Z because I wanted to take the top off. Then every time I saw a C5Z I would want to sell my car because the C5 FRC is the best looking vette ever. Well needless to say I sold my C6 3 months after buying it for $4k more then I bought it for and just bought a Electron Blue C5Z and absolutely love it. I have been buying all kinds of mods and still have mod money in the bank. You cannot beat the FRC lines....they are so sexy

I had T-Tops on my Trans Am. I have T-Tops on my 300zx. I hardly ever used the ones on the 300zx, and it was really just a pain in the **** to put the T-Tops back on when I was in a hurry. I don't mind the hard top. I feel a little safer and it looks good. Windows go down and I get plenty of air. I don't regret the Z06 at all.

Then you have a car that has similiar performance of a C5Z06 and the top comes off. DOHC engine and 405 horsepower with a 7500rpm redline.
They are also in the same price range.

Obviously, most with a Z06/FRC will support what they have. I don t blame them at all. Its the car with the most hp-from the factory. If you re like me-And alot of others- I LOVE the look of the Z/FRC, but i also LOVE the open air and alot more motor than a bolt-on LS6 has. For the first time in my life, i bought EXACTLY what i wanted- A coupe, then i dropped in a 427 w/just under 12-1 CR.W/ALL of the bolt ons, as well as a beefed up Z06 tranny and diff. Mine's a 2001, so i already have the bigger torquetube. You ll NEVER catch me argueing about which is better because some people are different. But , FOR ME, Its open air and almost 650fwhp NA. My nitrous set-up ensures ill never be bored with this amount of power. (ill use the Nitrous someday, im sure) - Jason

i had a '99 'vert before this.
if they made a z06 in a 'vert, i'd be driving it.
but, they didn't.
oh well i must suffer...
seriously, unless you've had a 'vert or a coupe prior (or enjoyed some sort of convertible car previously), you won't miss it. just open both windows if you want a rush of air.
there's the occasional times i wish i had a 'vert, but most of the time here on the east coast weather (hot & humid, or cold), i don't.

two years ago i started looking for a z0 and obviously thought nothing of a 'verted or targa'd z0. i had driven/ridden in a number of c5/c6 z0's, but there was something about the test drive of my '02 z0 with the top down that just clicked with me. i think the salesman knew that cuz the first thing he did was drop the top.
if i'm not mistaken, GB is the one who helped illmac77 "remove the fr" in his frc. and from what i've read, he is very happy with the results. as he should be, they did a great job.
in the end, everyone's got their opinion re: each of the body styles (nothing new) and i would hope that no one would knock whichever one they own. i agree that the c5 frc/z0 is a classic look which i love. but IMHO, i also feel lucky to have stumbled upon a special hybrid of z0 performance and drop top looks and exhilaration.
peace,
rich

I've always prefered the "hard top"/ FRC roof line, add in the Z's character, and I couldn't be happier. I like other people's verts, but never wanted one for myself.
