I've had the car for about a little over a month. I've never locked the car manually, always used the key FOB. Today for some odd reason I decided to make sure the FOB was working. I stepped out of the car, pushed the lock button on the FOB twice(I heard the horn sound), then tried to open the drivers side door. It opened, the alarm went off. The passenger door opened too. The car has never once been locked since I bought it!!! From the inside, I tried to lock the doors using the panel buttons and neither door works. Makes a sound like it wants to, but nothing. However, the unlock button works on both doors from the inside, and the unlock on the FOB works too. So, why won't the FOB lock the doors and why can't I lock the car from the inside?
Before you do anything else, have your battery checked. Low voltage causes all kind of odd problems in these cars. Withthe summer heat weak batteries show theri worst.

How ironic you mention that because my voltage has been very inconsistent, ranging from 13.1 to 14.3 volts. I'll definitely check it!
I had the same problem with the passenger side of my 02. Dealer where I bought it from said the passenger side was not geyying the proper voltage. They replaced the module and now it works fine.
i have had that same problem since the car was new. The dirvers door wouldn't lock or unlock sometimes. It would make the noise like it was but it wouldn't work. I have had the car in the dealership numerous times and they changed the lock module and other times said there was nothing wrong with the car. Now the warranty is over and I still have the same problem. The only other thing besides a bad battery that may be causing the problem is a bad ground. Most of the car is not metal and maybe its hard to find a decent ground. Just a thought. Not saying it is a definite reason but maybe a possibility....
My 2002 has the same problem, except it is intermittent. I found this link that seems like it will solve the problem. It is one or two of the relays on the door control module.
My current C5 had this problem when i got it a few years ago. I started locking mine by hand and also just working the manual locking switch back and forth to loosen it up a little, after about a week or two of this it began working. I'm convinced that on mine the mechanism was just to tight for the silinoid(sp) to work, and after manually using it, it loosened up enough to function properly.
