I have recently purchased an '02 zo6 and would like to jack up the HP
with a few upgrades but am on a budget of approx $600. does anyone have any suggestions?.........(middamaglu)
Intake and Tune is about the only way to itch out more hp without spending more then $600. Though i would not get a tune yet if you plan on more mods in the not so distant future.
headers and intake. obx headers and x pipe can be had for around $500-$600 or so and inake can be peiced together for about $150 or so. then you will need a tune to run right and let that thing breath, of course another $400. so save up my friend.
I agree with learning to drive the car. But you probably won't be satisfied with that answer.
Back before I got more in depth with modding my car I was running 367whp on a dyno that reads b/t 350-355whp stock 02+ C5Z's. This was with the stock tune, Blackwing intake, smooth airbridge coupler, Lingenfelter Ported TB, TB coolant bypass, and 170 thermostat.
Coolant bypass $5
Intake $300
Port TB $100
T-stat $40
This may not seem like much, but the cost is low and most cars with headers intake and tune are making an average of only 15hp more and will cost $2000 more. Have fun
Thanks for the suggestions regarding low budget HP increase mods for my '02 z06. I have heard that a dyno tune can help but the prices I've
heard are about as expensive as after market add-ons. How about a chip? I've heard mixed advise on this option.Does anyone have any
info on re-programing the computer? The header option scares me because I have had a conversation with someone who went that route (along with adding some other goodies) only to find out that he could not get an inspection sticker because the car would not pass the state emissions test.
There is no chip in these cars. You can get a tune with a laptop using HP Tuners or EFILIVE or you can use a handheld plug-in such as diablo predator, hypertech ect. In my opinion unless you plan on staying basic i would skip the handhelds and get a professional tune from a tuner who uses hptuners. Once you get a tune you don't really need to change anything unless you add more mods.
In my state moving the location of the catalytic converters can cause you to fail inspection but i have never had a problem with it. As long as you by headers that have air fittings and run high flow cats you should not have a problem. Sometimes you will throw rear o2 codes but those can be tuned out using any of the mentioned tuning methods.
IF you run headers without the air pump/plumbing and off road x pipe then that can cause problems come inspection/emission time. Contact some of the sponsors on this board or search around for more information regarding this issue. Unless you live in CA you probably won't have to worry much when buying headers.
I agree with Tremor1, you should change the fluids and learn to drive the car first, unless you have already own a 400+ hp car. I would take it stock to your local autocross (try SCCA.org) or do a NASA HPDE. Once you master the 400+ hp in the curves (because going straight is relatively easy) then you will be ready for more. I still have the stock hp, but upgraded the suspension (Pfadt shocks, sway bar & HAWK HP Plus pads) after a year and only now having the car for two years am I thinking about more HP.
Don't know where you're located but make friends with other vette people, I got my tune for $150 and it made a sotp difference. A kid with a laptop and a 1089 hp turbo vette. Check out crazychris.
