Default Z06 Oil

I didn't notice until after I had changed the oil in my Z06 that the auto part store had given me 10W30 instead of the 5W30 that I requested. After changing the oil I took a test drive and notice that the oil pressure was running 50 to 60 psi. With the 5W30 it usually ran between 40 and 50.

Can anyone tell me if the 10W30 will harm the seals or anything in the engine? I remember the days when we'd substitute two cans of STP for a quart of oil in the big block chevies. That never seemed to hurt, but the engineering in the Z06s is much more refined and I am concerned that the heavier oil will produce too much pressure and blow something.

I don't think it will hurt it but I wouldn't chance it. You still get those high pressure readings after it's up to operating temperature? Drain and replace it with the right stuff and you won't have to wonder. Use it in another vehicle.

You're safe. Many of us run heavier oil in hotter climates with no issues.

If the temperature in your area does not dip below 0 Fahrenheit, the owners manual states you can use 10w30. You're fine.

10-30 is fine especially if you're in a warmer climate.

You really shouldn't have any pressure difference since they both are 30w after warmup. I think you might have the beginning of the dreaded oil pressure sensor failure starting to happen. The next thing will be the oil gage pegged at 80 lbs. even at idle.

Default oil

Here in Florida I use 10-30 all year round because of the heat.
Been doing it for years with no issues.

10-30 will wear out your engine after a couple hundred K miles!

Don't know if I would run 15W50, Little too thick for me.

10w-30 is fine...the only draw back to heavier oils is added crank case windage...which = less power(typically small 5hp or less)

I agree. The only differences between the two oils is one is a 5 weight base stock and the other is a 10 weight. The 5 weight has more viscosity thickeners in it than the 10 weight so its visicosity is the same as a 10w30 oil or a straight 30 weight oil at temperature.

Down here in Texas, I never use anything but 10W30.
You might see slightly higher oil pressures when cold, but when up to temperature, they should be the same.
