what exactly is the difference between just having your traction control on and putting it in "competitive driving" mode?
mode 1 traction on(no spinning wheels) and stability on ( no sideways )
mode 2 all off (spin tires allowed and no computer switching allowing you to spin out or go sideways.)
mode 3 competative mode... spinning wheels allowed for a burnout..... but stability control (sideways) prevent still on.

A little bit simplified but close. Stability control allows some sideways movement (sometimes a lot). What it really does is help you keep the car pointed in the direction you are turning the steering wheel. So if you are making a sharp turn to the left and the front wheels are pushing (tight in NASCAR terms) the stability control will apply the left side rear brake to make the car turn more to the left and reduce the push. If you are making a sharp left hand turn and the rear starts to swing out or oversteer (loose in NASCAR terms) it applies the outside front brake to keep the rear in line. Or combinations of both of those. There is a dead band where the system does nothing but as wheel speeds increase the dead band gets smaller so the system reacts quicker. Etc, etc, etc.
thank you everyone for clearing that up for me. i haven't driven the car hard enough to find out the difference on my own and i'm sure i'll learn what's more effective for different styles of driving.
