As I was walking up to my Corvette yesterday, something did not look right. When I got close, I noticed the frame around the HUD was cracked in half. Anyone else ever have this happen? Does it snap into place so I can replace it easily, or is this one of those things that I will need to remove the dash board and replace the entire HUD?
Same thing happened to me. The bezel is held in place with 4 pins. I made the mistake of thinking I could just pull out my broken one and slip in the new one. Didn't know about the pins untill it was to late. Needless to say I ended up breaking the pins off and putting the bezel in place from the top. It fits plenty tight and havn't had any problems popping up.
it's a $20 part, I often visit Cocoa Beach, but wouldn't have time to help out. very simple job, I'll talk to my dad, maybe he can help out(lives on Cocoa Beach)
I agree, Florida sunshine is a killer, but what a way to go!!! I will take the Florida heat over the Northern cold anytime. Besides, the snow is never too deep to drive the Corvette here!
One reply that the dash definitely has to come off and one reply that it can just slip in. I guess the difference is one way is the right way and one way is the easy way. Ordinarily, I go with the right way, but if taking off the entire dash is involved, I may go the easy way.
I looked at Gene's site, but could not figure out how to identify the part number. When I went to the catalog search, I could not find it either. I did find it on Ebay for $29, but would rather buy from a forum member. Anyone know the correct part number so I can buy from Gene?
To replace the piece correctly, the dash does need to come out. Mine is also cracked and I've been searching for a new bezel for ~3 weeks now. I've been unable to find someone who has the part. Please let me know if you locate it. Thanks
I GOT MINE FROM OUR CLUB CHEV DEALER WHICH IS A MEMBER CRYSTAL CHEV CRYSTAL RIVER FL. IF YOU TAKE YOUR TIME THE DASH COMES OUT WITH NO TROUBLE. MINE IS A CONV AND YOU START BUY REMOVING THE WATER FALL AND WORK UP TO THE DASH TRY TO REMEMBER THE SIZE OF THE SCREWS AND WHERE THEY GO. I HAVE HAD MINE OUT ABOUT 4 TIMES. MINE DIDN'T HAVE HUD SO I INSTALL IT
I got mine from gmpartshouse (Gene). $39. and change including shipping. I can't find my paperwork or I would have a part number for you but I do recall the number I had on the back of mine had shown as superceeded by the new part number which was EXACTLY the same part.
There was NO WAY I was removing the whole dash to replace it (which the Chevy shop manual says to do).
Here is what I did. A bit barbaric but it worked.
I CAREFULLY cracked out the exisiting one as it was already in pieces. The four "pins" will most likley remain in their spaces. Then CAREFULLY take a plastic trim removal tool like you would use to pry out a door panel and you can get the retainers to come off the underside of the pins...or the pins will break off first. Its a bit irritating working on that sloped part of the dash but take your time and occassionaly step out of the vehicle to get a look through the windshield to see what you are doing. I know it sounds very bad to say "break something out" but in essence thats what I did.
Once the pins are out you are ready to put the new bezel in. Coat it with Armor All or similar on both sides to TRY to protect it from future UV damage. And don't forget to clean the screen of the HUD while you have better access to it with the bezel off.
It sets in place easily but there is no way to secure it unless you can indeed access the underside of the pins to attach a retainer. I chose to use a combination of double faced tape and a blob or two or carefully placed black adhesive similar to emblem or weatherstripping adhesive. Black RTV sealant might work as well.
Mine has stayed in place that way for about three months so I don't suspect its going anywhere.
Sure its not the "official" method of replacement but I thought removing the entire dash was a bit excessive.
Question for everyone and especially Florida Mike:
If I break off the retaining pins for the bezel, is it possible the HUD will fall down into the dash? This is not what is also holding the HUD in place is it?
No. The bezel pins mount into what appears to be part of the dash framework while the actual HUD is mounted into the "firewall\dash supporting assembly". Thats in quotes as I don't know if thats the terminology Chevy uses for it.
Main point is the bezel comes off and on mutually exclusive of the HUD.
