Default service column lock

i have a 98 c5 that is manual, had the column lock show up 3 weeks ago, had it towed to dealer, they charged me $398 to bypass this by putting smaller lock plate and switch. now it did the same thing this weekend, i had it towed in again. they said now they are going to install the CLB kit. i have a case # with GM but not getting anywhere with them. if it is a recall way as a consumer am i having to pay for it.

As Jrose says you can read up on this till you are blue in the face. Bottom line, GM said that as of Feb 29th 2007 they will no longer be responsible for any column lock issues. I took it all the way to the top and was told: 1) if it was "fixed" the issue should not reapear (HA!) & 2) if it does reapear (huh?) take it to the dealer that did the original fix (and hope THEY) will honor their work (HA! again).

Mark,
If your dealership did the initial "fix" 3 weeks ago, they should stand behind their work and replace the "K harness", which is GM's version of the Column Lock Bypass (CLB). The K harness is notorious for failure. Have the dealership unlock the column and replace the K harness again. Then as soon as possible order a CLB from Corvettes of Houston, Mid-America, or any of the Corvette aftermarket dealers. Take the K harness out, install the CLB and that should solve your problem. I say "should" because some `98's don't respond to the CLB.

You might PM member 8vette7 and ask his opinion on this. He has done a lot of research on this issue.

Good luck

You'll be back to the dealer again with their "fix". Purchase a CLB from one of the sources and embark on a DIY fix that will work......
