Default New Guy Question

Be kind to the new guy!!

I'm looking for my first Corvette. I have pretty much decided on a C5 model. I have seen quite a few Z06 models for sale. What does the Z06 option include?

Am I correct that the Z06 has a slightly larger engine, higher hp, and only comes with the 6 speed manual trannsmission??

Other differences?

Thanks for your help!

Andy

Hi Andy,

Welcome to the Forum, and congrats on deciding you need a C5! I love them, especially the Z06's.

The first place I would direct you to, is a sticky thread that discusses everything there is to discuss about the Z06. It covers all the differences between them and standard C5's, and goes over common issues and features and everything else. It's right here:

http://forums.corvetteforum.com/c5-z...tions-faq.html

That will provide a few hours' reading and will give you a LOT of information!

But to answer your questions briefly, I'll give you a short, cliff-notes rundown on the Z06. The Z06 is the high-performance version of the standard C5. (Not that a standard C5 is slow; they are very fast themselves) It doesn't have a bigger engine (both are 5.7 L) but its engine has different internals, among other things, that help contribute to it's increased power. They put out 385 to 405 HP, depending on the year. Z06's don't have all the options that standard C5's do; they generally come the same (barring color) with options including the Body Side Mouldings, Auto-Dimming mirrors, and there are one or two more I'm forgetting. All Z06's are six speed manuals, with different gearing than standard C5 manuals. Some Z06's have two-tone interiors; many are all black.

The Z06 does not come in convertible form; though a few members here have converted theirs into convertibles anyway (and they look VERY sharp!). The Z06 has different seats than standard C5's, and has some subtle trim differences (gauge faces are checkered and sport a Z06 logo; front fenders have a Z06 badge; etc.) The Z06's also have different rims and slightly wider tires all around, with a sportier suspension setup and different exhaust.

Anyway that's a basic rundown; but look at the link above to get everything you ever wanted to know about the Z06.

They pretty much said it all, I like to add it's one great vette and a real pleasure to drive. You do want to be careful with the car it can get the best of you quick. Welcome to the forum, and the best in finding your Z.

I've owned both a regular C5 auto and my present C5 Z06. A C5 is definetely a nice car with a comfortable ride and excellent performance and great gas mileage, too. A Z06 is all that and more, and yet can still be a daily driver, as I do mine. Think of a Z06 as a Vette with an attitude. It can hold its own against just about anything on wheels with license plates.

Get the C5Z, you won't regret it. It's quite an amazing car that will hold its own against almost any car on the road. It will put a very wide smile on your face every time you drive it, and the feeling never gets old. I can't imagine any car being more fun to drive than this. Truly, IMO, one of the best vehicles ever made. Reliable, relatively cheap and easy to maintain, and just an all around amazing performance machine. Many people refer to it as a street legal race car with all the creature comforts that you'd ever need. I can't EVER see myself parting ways with this vehicle.

There are lots of Z06s in our area...maybe a member would let you check their car out. I would offer but I'm over in Kuwait on a "business trip"...

Thanks for the helpful information! I have to go with an auto transmission on this vehicle. I am learning some of the background so it seems that the auto trans requirment will rule out a Z06.

Doing my research and checking over the ads here and on Craig's List.

Thanks again for your help!
