Default Radar Detectors

What is the best radar detectors these days? I have been looking at the Escort Passport 9500ix, but it is a bit pricey ($400+). Any sub $200 goodies? I don't really need the GPS stuff anyway (which from what I understand would be for traffic camera's et al). I would only be driving a bit faster in Hill Country (rural areas), in the city I am a good boy (even when the dude in the Suburu tries to race me...sheesh, what is it with these people?).

Try a search, this has been discussed thousands of times. I put radar detectors into the Search this forum and it returned 244 posts.
Most choose the top Escort or the Valentine 1

This would be the coolest one!

But at a grand, you can get about 4 tickets before it would begin to pay for itself!

I have an Escort 8500 but to be honest with all the use of the instant on laser they use in my area I don't feel that protected. I have never heard anyone say anything bad about a Valentine 1.

I'm using the Escort 8500, for a couple of years now, so far, so good.

I'm leaning heavily toward the Passport 9500ix or the V1. One thing I don't really "get" is the arrows on the V1. Why do the arrows make a difference? I've seen many people mention them before on other message boards. Wouldn't you slow down regardless of where the signal was originating from?

Just to let you know where it's coming from. Yes most slow down either way. I had the V1 and it was good. I don't really speed so I sold it.

I used to use a Escort 8500 and it worked fine for years, but I wanted to get rid on the x-band false signals and I do like the GPS on marking false signals of the areas I drive all the time. It has worked for me, the stored signal was there, however another radar was going off so I slowed down and yup, there was Mr Fuzz waiting to catch someone and this has happened a few times since I have purchased my 9500ix in the few months of ownership, glad I upgraded

i have the 9500ix and it is a very awsum radar detector!! The GPS is for storing false signals , not sure about red light cameras we dont have them in indiana !! when i drive around town all the cvs , walgreens , walmarts , etc .. dont even get a beep out of it ..
I also have a V1 and to be fair , i think it has a little better range in the KA band side !! But it beeps at everything and the bogey counter well when theres only 1 store and it gives me 5 bogeys hmmm something not right !!

The arrows are useful for telling you where the radar is coming from. If it's behind me, I am alot less worried about the threat versus if the radar is positioned in front of me. +1 vote for the V1

One example would be at night, with a rear signal that is slowly getting stronger. It let's you know someone is behind you and overtaking you, even though a look in the rear-view mirror only reveals lots of headlights in the distance.

Situational awareness is what the arrows are all about. I have found them to be MOST helpful over the years.

The arrows on the V1 are simple.

If they indicate the threat is to the side, the threat isn't much of a threat since radar can't determine speed from the side very accurately, if even at all.

If the arrow points ahead of you, SLOW DOWN...

If the arrow points behind you, SPEED UP and outrun the threat!

My V1 works like a champ, and I get very few false alarms. I do like that I get the occasional chirp when I pass a store with those automated doors... its kind of like a re-assurance that my detector still works. If mine only ever chirped at actual radar threats from the police, then after having no run-ins for a while I would wonder if my detector has broke and I'd never know it.

Yea I'm not sure what's up with escort I've got the new 9500-ix and I must say it works flawless. But now they came out with new model. Not sure what's it's all about? I would like to see a comparison

The V1, once you get used to the arrows you wonder how you ever got by without them.
