I encountered a problem today. I took my C5 out this morning for my weekend coffee run and the car ran fine. Then I got in it to move it later around noon and I got this message, PULL KEY OUT , WAIT 10 SECONDS.
I did this and when I put the key back in and started it it said SERVICE STEERING COLUM LOCK.
When I started it and put it in drive and stepped on the gas the car shut itself off. I repeated starting it and trying to move it but when I put it in drive and stepped on the gas it shut itself off. I am the 3rd owner and the guy I bought it from said the original owner had a problem fixed under a recall that involved a steering colum lock.
This is my first corvette and am kind of a novice but I talked to guy tonight that was a service manager at a chev dealer and he said I would probably have to take it in to have someone who knows whats going on look at it.
He told me I could try unhooking the battery and try hooking it back up and maybe it would clear the computer.
He also told me to get VISS report on the car to see what service and recall work was done.
This is a 98 that has 24,000 on it and is really a nice car and really well taken care of.
Does anyone have any feedback or has had this happen to them??? Stuck in Buffalo N.Y.

I have read that the recall doesn't always work, Do a search for CLB, I think you might need to install the CLB to fix your prob, I am sure others will chime in.

Your best bet is to install a Column Lock Bypass, but you will need to get the column unlocked before the install. There have been a lot of threads here on this issue - try a search on this topic and I'd bet you get a lot of hits.
Does your steering wheel still turn from side to side? If so, sounds like the recall on the column lock was done and that means that the fuel pump is programmed to shut off above 2-3 mph. I can't remember off-hand what the fix is for that. Maybe someone else will chime in if they remember.
Especially about a fifth of the way down here's a paragraph on it
"Q I had the recall done and now after a few weeks my car is getting the dreaded “Service Column Lock” error message and I can’t drive it because the fuel is shut off. What should I do?
A You have the following choices: 1) return to the dealer and make them fix it; 2) A4 cars - replace or remove the Harness "K" assembly; 3) remove the recall mods and restore to original; 4)MN6/M12 cars only - go into your passenger footwell, locate the relay added by the recall mod, remove the relay altogether and bypass the circuit as described below (my choice)."
