Default Does your Z leak coolant?

I have noticed that every once in a while I have a coolant spot under my car.. This does not happen all the time. I guess it happens when I've been out on a long ride or when I have get on it really really hard.. Now the spot is not big at all its kinda small but it still bugs me. Could it be a radiator issue? A res issue? WTF?? lol Has any one ever had this happen?? Its a 01 Z.

My guages don't read as if its heating up the temp runs right around 198-205 or so when im on the rd. but I opend up the hood right after a run cuz I heard the sound of water boiling and sure enough it was coming from the reservoir.

any input?

Sounds like your system is not air tight and it has a leak somewhere.

Maybe a bad seal on the resevoir tank cap or lose clamps, cracked tank, etc ...

No leaks and no boiling over.

It's probably just water from the air conditioning condenser.

Do you have to continually add coolant?

The fluid does not seem to drop.. and i know for a fact its not water.. cuz it has the slippery coolant feel.. plus it the same red/orange color.. (DexCool) lol

mine had a leak in the system. Added more coolant until the ratio of coolant to water was high, and it sealed the leak on its own. 5k later, no issues.

Do not do that, To much anti-freeze to water ratio will cause your car to overheat.

Water is actually a better cooling agent than anti-freeze. The anti-freeze is there to stop the system from freezing and damaging the block and other components.

yes, I agree, I should have mentioned that I was running more water than coolant. My car doesn't run hot, I would guess that I am around 60/40 now.

I had a bad hose clamp on the hose that connects to the bottom of the throttle body. You can't see the clamp, you have to feel for it. It didn't leak all the time and the only way I found it was to pressurize the system. Turns out the clamp was bad from the factory in 04

Look at the bottom of your water pump. Does the drip hit the top of your leaf spring?

Let the car sit overnight, check the water level in the overflow tank, should be up to the cold water mark.

Sounds like the seal on the water pump is leaking. Try using a small mirror and flashlight for a better look. The belt shouldn't be wet.

Best of luck on the repairs.

No idea if LS motors have the weap hole. But it's common on older cars with the weap hole slowly leaking antifreeze. Normally a sign its about to go.

I was at Road Atlanta and a ZO6 had an antifreeze leak that turned out to be a feeze plug that was the problem. Anitfreeze leaks are not common. If you can get the car on a rack after getting it up to operating temps you should be able to see where it is coming from.

I ran the car last night to one of out local meets, stayed on it a bit.. and when i got home.. nothing.. no leak no drip.. nothing.. So i guess this only happens when it wants to.. its frustrating..

I know your problem. Coolant is coming out the weep hole from your water pump. I can almost promise thats it. Was a PITA for me to figure out. I went to advance auto and bought one with a warrranty for a little over $100. Changed it out in an hour and a half...took time not to get coolant all over me

Its the water pump.. I went through the exact same thing about 1 year ago and it drove me nuts.. There is an infarred green dye that you can add to your radiator.. Put this stuff in and in a couple of days you will be able to get under the car and pinpoint or verify that it is indeed the waterpump leaking when it wants to.

One thing for sure...once the water pump seal starts to leak, it will not get better. Just a matter of time before you have to change it.
The seal should not leak enough to drip at all. GM will say if there are signs that it seeps but does not drip that is normal.
