I had a similar situation when I was shopping for a C5 over the weekend at CARMAX, everytime I put it in 1st gear it would grind I even told the salesperson to drive it and it is transmission problem. They would get it fixed this week it looks like a clutch pad replacement. It is 2002 6spd with 37,500 miles. I'm glad I have not purchased it yet.

Sounds like a worn clutch or you need to bleed the clutch. Have you checked your fluids?

Try changing the fluid but more than likely a worn synchro, time to get hooked by Rodneys team over at RPM.

If you have a 1997-2000 C5 you have paper blocker rings. If someone put in Mobil 1 ATF, this could cause this. I experienced this with my 1998 after 50,000 miles. Your 6th gear synchros don't go bad (who speed shifts into 6th?!).

I changed fluid to Amsoil ATD and it stopped grinding immediately and is fine after 20,000 more miles.

Two things I'd look at Jimmy before you tear into it.
1) clutch fluid, look at the side of the clutch master if the fluid is grey or black it's time to change. Or open the cap and check it and the level. I use DOT3 even though I have a full C6Z clutch package.
2) Shifter alignment, you can read post on the Forum, it doesn't take much to have it grind or bind in certain gears.

Good point, because it only happens in one gear.

DANGER,,WARNING,,,get that Mobile 1 out of there ASAP!!!!! It will KILL your syncro blocker rings!!!!! Amsoil or Royal Purple if you want synthetic but NOT Mobile 1!!! 97 through 2000 have the "paper faced" blocker rings that will be degraded by Mobile 1!! Fluid change is a good idea and a place to start,,you just used the wrong stuff!!

Worn out 6th gear synchro. If the car had low miles I would change out the fluid & that would probably cure the problem.
