Find the thinnest 3M product you can so one letter doesn't stick out more than the others.
(Two years ago) NAPA had a black 3M double sided tape that was thinner than the typical gray you find in the paint aisle of HOME DEPOT. It was much easier to cut with an EXACTO blade (I had to install some new running deer C-pillar emblems on a '96 Impala SS).
Thanks Hotwheels. I was hoping to avoid the tape option and was looking for a liquid adhesive that might work. Still waiting for a reply from 3M. If I have to, I'll go the tape route.
Some of the 3M adhesives can be harmful to clear coat paint, so they may also damage the dashboard surface.
When I was doing the Impala SS emblems, I bought a tube of 3M interior/exterior emblem adhesive based on the information from the 3M website...then I read the tube fine print. I'm glad I didn't use it. It basically could have made the clear coat soften and melt. That's when I decided to use the double sided tape from NAPA.
Maybe just a light application of clear silicone would work for you?
hmmm... good to know! the website doesn't offer much on the dos/don'ts of each product and the info given is vague. I have a feeling either the letters are coming off, or tape is in my future!
if the bottom of the letters are still sticky just try cleaning the adhesion surface with denatured alcohol. if they are not sticky anymore, i would clean both the bottom the the letter, and the adhesion surface with the alcohol and then use 2-sided carpet tape. this stuff is clear, super strong, and about the thinnest double sided tape you can get. you should be able to get it at home depot, the hardware store, or a department store. it is about 1/32" thick and will not noticably make your letters stick out farther. this stuff is not easy to work with when cutting into small peices, but it works great.
