Default Hood Seal ?

Does a 2001 vette come with a hood seal originally that can be upgraded to a performance hood seal? I bought mine used and it has a small weather strip on the front and sides of the hood but the hood seals I see online seem to be more heavy duty and more effective. Is it worth it to buy a new one?

Thanks

Your front seal was added by the previous owner. The side hood seals came from the factory. Does your engine compartment stay relatively clean? If so, you don't need to change anything.

It did not come with a hood seal. You can buy the weatherstripping from an auto parts store and make one yourself for a cheap price.

I think I got my performance hood seal at Home Depot.

My engine compartment stays pretty clean. I had just seen people post on here that they had gotten good hp gains and what not by doing it and forcing the air to come from underneath the car. I'm putting a blackwing in tomorrow so I didn't know if that would help it work better or anything

Complete BS about the HP gains with the hood seal...
I did notice less dust in my engine bay which I liked a lot ! Thats why I got it.

Any comments made about horsepower increases with the use of a "performance hood seal" are purely tongue in cheek.

Now, I do happen to own a very nice bridge that crosses San Francisco Bay and a really large hole in the ground in northern AZ...interested?

The hood seal is really a cheap but effective cure for water getting into the engine bay. I was constantly having corrosion in my hood light connection, which is right below the hood opening, and once I cleaned the connection and installed the hood seal I never had that problem again. I got it from Mid-America and it is just what they say it is, a great seal from water getting into the engine bay.

The performance hood seal is the best bang for buck you can get. The internal compression ratio of the engine bay doubled once I put on the performance hood seal. You can definitely feel it when you floor the car.. it no longer has that little lag and at speed, the car feels so incredibly solid from the suction that the performance hood seal gives the engine bay.

Just small strips on the sides come from the factory.

You guys are killin me The performance hood seal was my second mod. They do a good job at keeping dust and water out. I guess GM thought they could save a buck by not putting one on the car in the first place. Typical of the bean counters. My first mod was the performance steering wheel decal. Wow, talk about better steering and handling

I got a good 10-15hp gain with mine.

I like the hood seal for one good reason. I have a K&N FIPK and without the seal, I can imagine that when it rains, all sorts of water gets onto the filter. With the good hood seal, I think I got my second one from SouthernCarParts, since the first one I got from the place that always runs the 40% off sale was total crap, it has worked much better as opposed to just falling off.

If you want to retain the same look and function of the original seals located on the hood sides, trunk/hatch and on the vert the compartment door, then just buy one side of the GM/Chevy AC Delco seals used on the hood compartment, and cut it to fit. It mounts to the side as the other pieces do, not the bottom. The Chevy design is an "L" shape and acts like a flap to seal the seam.

Default Biggest Scam for C5 owners

The hood seal and the throttle body bypass are the 2 biggest scams for C5 owners. They both do absolutely nothing but lighten your wallet. The hood seal does not keep your underhood area cleaner (how could it the whole underside is wide open to the ground) and it does nothing to keep water out. I have a Donaldson blackwing filter on my car. I've had it on for about 3 or 4 years. When I first put it on I had a hood seal on the car I had put on earlier. A couple years ago I put a polished SS cover at the front of the hood opening and I had to remove the hood seal to do this. I could not put the seal back on because it had broken into pieces upon removal.

I have now driven the car for a couple of year without this seal and have noticed no difference at all either in the amount of dust under hood or any water on my filter. I have taken my car to the coin operated car wash and have still not seen any water on the filter or in the area at all. I've driven it in heavy storms and no water has gotten in. Why do you think General Motors doesn't put one there from the factory, because it's not needed (and Z06 air cleaners have an opening that is wide open to the filter right there)
