Just a thought. But could window tint cause it? Mine is tinted so I never chance it with the defroster. Besides it's a GQ so I really have no need for the defroster.
I've heard of this one time around a year ago in the COLD winter, freezing temps!
A defroster was used (Can't remember if it had tint or not) but the Owner turned it on and Kapleweeee! Busted glass!
I honestly don't use mine and really never have the need to, I'd rather HEAT the small cabin of the C5 up with the Heater as it will cure the frost on the back hatch! if necessary

This is only my opinion, but I can't see how tinting could do this. The glass must of had a flaw somewhere. But I had a tiny stone chip in one of my corvettes windshield years ago. I parked it facing the Atlantic Ocean while I was down the shore one summer. Came out the next morning, and the chip had turned into a major crack? So who knows ?
I posted pics of my T/A hatch blow out in that thread as well.
Turned on the rear defroster and that was it. I asked the service manager and my local Chevrolet Dealer. He said he never heard of that happening. Vette was checked by the dealer, no issues found. There was no tint on the window. Insurance covered everything 100%.
The window shattering is caused from the window being almost frozen and then heat goes to it from the defroster and it thaws to fast and boom. Same thing goes when the window is extremely hot and the cold air continues to hit it from the inside and sthe sun from the outside.
Not sure I agree with all the above comments. I had a 97 Z-28 DD that was parked outside all but the last year I owned it. The windows were tinted with the light tint not the dark one.
It was -18 degrees one morning, totally frosted over. I fired it up, with the defroster and heater for the front window, then hit the button for the rear defroster, and then went in the house to drink a cup of coffee. I then drove away to work.
I firmly believe that if the window breaks there is a flaw in the glass. I used my rear deforster every morning on that Camaro for 6 years and 84K with no trouble.
