I have tried to read the 50+ pages in the tech section. I am thinking of buying a 2002 vert. It was built Oct. 29, 2001. It only has 1,500 miles. I have the GM Vehicle Inquiry System summary. It shows a required field action RC 04006 with NA on the posted date colum and status closed.
According to the service manager at the local Chevy dealer the "real" GM fix is to replace the older column lock with the newest one (installed on 2004's). After several failed GM harness kits installed as the "bandaid" cheap fix, the owner of the dealership called Detroit and complained to the engineers. They final admitted that the "real" fix is to replace the much more expensive column lock (and still disable it) and dump the harness kit idea.
They installed the new column lock in 2007 and it hasn't locked up since.
That doesn't mean there haven't been related problems though. This past three months I've repeatedly gotten the "Pull key, wait 10 seconds, Service column lock" message. It did not result in a locked column but everytime it happened the security system would shut off the fuel at 2mph if I tried to drive it.
The local GM dealer checked everything....PCM, BCM, grounds, fuses, battery, etc. Nothing prevented it from happening again and again over the last 2 months. EAch time I had to have it towed to the GM dealer. Finally they threw up their hands and agreed there's nothing else that they knew to do to fix it. Fortunately (sort of) they were one of the GM dealers that GM has disowned so they agreed to install the CLB free if I got one. I bought one the next day and it was installed.
To make sure that I would not be plagued again by the fuel shut off, I had ECS retune it at Carlisle last weekend. Part of the tune was to reprogram the PCM so that the fuel shut off was disabled.
I do have a CLB, not installed, also though just incase I need it.
If you already have it then just install it. You never know when it might lock up. It might be raining or otherwise not favorable place to perform any repairs.
I understand from some GM Engineers that the new column lock bypass kit finally works. They have 4,000 in the field so far during the last 6 months, all working. I haven't heard yet if they are making it a campaign to those who have already installed an old fix. Regardless, it is available at Dealerships now.
